What should I know about Water Sports Aigüestortes National Park?
The Aigüestortes and Estany de Sant Maurici National Park is the only national park in the autonomous community of Catalonia. It is located in the heart of the Pyrenees with a high mountain geography. Much of the territory exceeds 1000 meters of altitude, with peaks of more than 3000 meters.
Why should I choose Aigüestortes National Park for my Water Sports adventure?
Biological value
Here there are different ecosystems: in the low areas, meadows, crops and forests. At medium altitude, evergreen forests and in the highest zones, high mountain rocks. As it is a protected site, the flora and fauna are kept in a fairly wild state. Anyway, the footprint of man is present through livestock and hydroelectric exploitation mainly.
Variety of activities
In the Aigüestortes National Park you can not only enjoy water sports but also hiking, medium and high mountain ascents and half-day or full-day traverses to get to know the emblematic natural sites of the Pyrenees.
Water everywhere
Water in all its forms (lakes, rivers, waterfalls) is the main star of this territory. In fact, the name itself says it: Aigüestortes means "crooked waters." It is an area characterized by zigzagging streams where water meanders along extensive high plateaus. In addition, the clarity of its lakes allow us to see in a mirror the huge mountains around.
What can I expect from the weather during my Water Sports trip in Aigüestortes National Park?
The eastern zone has a continental climate and is fed by the tributaries of the Noguera Pallaresa, which flow into the San Mauricio Lake. The western side (Aigüestortes) has a high mountain Atlantic climate with tributaries from the Noguera Ribagorzana.
When is the best time to travel to Aigüestortes National Park for Water Sports?
All year round although the best time is during the European summer.
