Located in the northwest of Africa Morocco has a lengthy coastline of both the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. A rugged and remote interior punctuated by mountains. And large sections of the southeast lies in the Sahara Desert. The capital of Morocco is Rabat, which lies at the mouth of the Bou Regreg, and is one of the four imperial cities of the country. Its medina (old town) is listed as a World Heritage Site. The largest city in the country is the port of Casablanca, with a population of approximately 3.4 million urban inhabitants.

Peaks of the Atlas Mountains

Stretching from Tunisia in the east to Morocco in the west, the 2,500-kilometer mountain range reaches its peak of 4,167 meters on Toubkal in Morocco, which is also the highest peak in North Africa. The mountains’ broad slopes are carpeted with pine trees and cedars and topped with a sprinkling of snow.

A haven for rare species

Besides the herds of goats and wild herbs, the mountains of Morocco are home to a number of animals and plants that are unique to Africa, with many of them being under threat of extinction. These include the Atlas cedar, and animals like the Barbary macaque and lion.

Imperial treasures

The deep traditions and customs of Morocco is a blend of influences. The majority Islamic country has also been largely impacted by the native Berbers, Andalusians, as well as from colonial times, such as France, Portugal and Spain. Striking examples include Marrakesh, Fes and Rabat.

Morocco generally has a moderate and subtropical climate, with cool breezes from the Atlantic and Mediterranean. Yet as you travel farther inland the temperatures are more extreme, with colder winters and hotter summers.

Arab and Berber are the official languages, with French widely spoken.
