Day 4: Hike to Frias and Blest ports, back to Bariloche

From Rocca hut we can see the valley where we are going to be walking this day. We have a big downhill from the hut to the valley floor and most of the mileage is relatively flat until we reach Frias port. We must get up early so we don't miss the boat trip back to Bariloche! This trail goes through a very different western forest so it is a very special day to enjoy nature.

From Frías port, we go across the lake, then take a bus to Blest port where we will take another boat to Bariloche sailing through Nahuel Huapi lake. We will spend the night in Bariloche. Great opportunity to take a shower and enjoy a meal in town!

Day 5: Frey hut

Before noon a shuttle will pick us up in Bariloche and after a 20 minute drive we will start the hike at the base of Cerro Catedral. We begin traversing this mountain where we can see the outskirts of Bariloche before we get into Van Titter Valley. In this valley we get most of the elevation gain for the day, first through a forest and then zigzagging on rocky terrain. Once we get to the hut, we can spend the hours left of the afternoon resting and having a mate next to Toncek lagoon.

Day 6: San Martin hut (Jakob lake)

This day is the hardest of the trip. We will walk on rocky terrain and we will have two passes to go through before getting to the next hut. The 1st one is Catedral ridge. When we leave the hut we will ascend to Schmoll lagoon and then surpass some big boulders we will get to the ridge. From here we descend a scree slope to Rucaco valley. Here we find water again and some forests to take a good rest in the shade.

Then we will continue ascending again to the second ridge, Brecha Negra. Once we are at its highest point we do the final descent of the day again on rocky terrain. Finally in the hut we will have dinner and enjoy the amazing landscape surrounding it.

Skill level high

Day 7: San Martin hut to Bariloche

If the group wants to do some extra mileage we can start the day by visiting the Témpanos lagoon, 1,5 km away from the hut. When we come back and pick up our backpacks, we will start the descent on the normal route through Casa de Piedra valley. Even though it is downhill, there is always some uphill too (also known as our Patagonia “flat” terrain). But mostly downhill.

At the end of the trail a shuttle will be waiting for us to bring us back to Bariloche city center (30 minutes approximately). And then it is our celebration time for succeeding on this expedition!

Mountain Guide

I was born and raised in a nomad life around Patagonia. After many years I came back to this beautiful part of the world to share my home land. I love being a host to anyone who wants to experience an outdoor life in this remote part of the world. I started my guiding career in New Zealand in 2013 and did many jobs abroad. In 2017 I got my Mountain guiding certification and split my life between Bariloche and El Chalten. Both amazing towns to explore. I love hiking, climbing and camping! Sharing adventures and meeting people from around the world is what drives me to be a mountain guide.

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Man

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Valeriya

You’re simply the best!!! :))) Explore-Share made everything easy and stress-free. Will definitely use again.

Joshua

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Cami

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
