Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

Our representatives will meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and take you to your hotel in Moshi.

In the evening there will be a briefing with our managers, who will also make sure you are ready to begin the climb.

Meal Plan: Bed& Breakfast

Dinner & Overnight: Salinero Hotel

Day 2: MACHAME GATE and CAMP

Elevation: 5,380 ft. to 9,350 ft.

Distance: 11 km/7 miles

Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

Habitat: Rainforest

We will drive around 50 minutes from Moshi to the Machame Gate. On the way, you will pass Machame village, on the lower slopes of the mountain.

As we leave the park gate, we will walk through the dense rain forest on a winding trail up a ridge until we reach the Machame Camp where we will spend the night.

Day 3: MACHAME CAMP TO SHIRA 2 CAMP

Elevation: 9,350 ft. to 12,500 ft.

Distance: 5 km/3 miles

Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

Habitat: Heath

We will leave the rainforest and continue on an ascending path up to a steep, rocky ridge.

On the Shira Plateau, we will pass through heather and open moorlands, then, we will cross a large river gorge until we reach Shira 2 Camp and overnight.

Day 4: SHIRA 2 CAMP TO LAVA TOWER

Elevation: 12,500 ft. to 15,190 ft.

Distance: 7 km/4 miles

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

LAVA TOWER TO BARRANCO CAMP

Elevation: 15,190 ft. to 13,044 ft.

Distance: 3 km/2 miles

Hiking Time: 2-3 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

We will continue to the east up a ridge and then head southeast towards the Lava Tower – a 300 ft. tall volcanic rock formation.

We will descend down to Barranco Camp through the strange but beautiful Senecio Forest to an altitude of 13,000 ft.

Although you will begin and end the day at the same elevation, the time spent at higher altitude is very beneficial for acclimatization

Day 5: BARRANCO CAMP TO KARANGA CAMP

Elevation: 13,044 ft. to 13,106 ft.

Distance: 5 km/3 miles

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

We will begin the day by descending into a ravine to the base of the Great Barranco Wall. Then we woññ climb a non-technical but steep, nearly 900 ft. cliff.

From the top of the Barranco, we will cross a series of hills and valleys until we descend sharply into Karanga Valley. One steeper climb up will take us to Karanga Camp.

This is a less demanding day meant for acclimatization.

Day 6: KARANGA CAMP TO BARAFU CAMP

Elevation: 13,106 ft. to 15,331 ft.

Distance: 4 km/2 miles

Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Habitat: Alpine Desert

We will leave for Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail.

After, we will continue up to the rocky section to Barafu Hut. At this point, you will have completed the Southern Circuit, which offers views of the summit from different angles. We will camp, rest, and enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day.

The Mawenzi and Kibo peaks are visible from where we will be.

Day 7: BARAFU CAMP TO UHURU PEAK/UHURU TO MWEKA

Elevation: 15,331 ft. to 19,341 ft.

Distance: 5 km/3 miles

Hiking Time: 7-8 hours

Habitat: Arctic

UHURU PEAK TO MWEKA CAMP

Elevation: 19,341 ft. to 10,065 ft.

Distance: 12km/7 miles

Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

Habitat: Rainforest

Around midnight, we will begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging stretch of the climb. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme.

We will go up in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, short, breaks. Near Stella Point (18,900 ft.), you will be rewarded with a magnificent sunrise over Mawenzi Peak.

Finally, we will arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Kilimanjaro and Africa.

From the summit, we will then descend straight down to the Mweka Hut camp site, stopping at Barafu for lunch.

The trail is very rocky and can be quite hard on the knees; trekking poles are helpful. Mweka Camp is situated in the upper forest and mist or rain can be expected in the late afternoon. Later in the evening, we will enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and some well-earned sleep.

Day 8: MWEKA CAMP TO MWEKA GATE

Elevation: 10,065 ft. to 5,380 ft.

Distance: 10 km/6 miles

Hiking Time: 3-4hours

Habitat: Rainforest

On our last Kilimanjaro day, we will continue the descent to Mweka Gate and then receive summit certificates.

At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy. From the gate, we continue another hour to Mweka Village. A vehicle will meet us at Mweka Village to drive us back to the hotel Moshi.

Meal Plan: Bed& Breakfast

Dinner & Overnight: Salinero Hotel

Day 9: MOSHI TO TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

You will be picked up at your hotel in Moshi at 5:30AM and transferred to the Tarangire National Park to begin your safari experience in this magnificent park which is famous for its large collection of baobab trees, spectacular large mammal population, and variety of bird species, not to mention one of the largest concentration of elephants in the country.

After your tour around the park, you will be transferred to the Lodge/Hotel for your overnight stay.

Meal Plan: Bed& Breakfast

Dinner & Overnight: Endoro Lodge

Day 10: NGORONGORO CRATER TO ARUSHA

After breakfast, we will descend 600m into this magnificent crater for a morning, half-day game drive.

The Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most densely crowded African wildlife areas in the world and is home to an estimated 30,000 animals including some of Tanzania’s last remaining black rhino. Supported by a year-round water supply and fodder, the Ngorongoro Crater, supports a vast variety of animals, which include herds of zebra, buffalo, eland, warthog, hippo, and giant African elephants. Another big draw card to this picturesque national park is the dense population of predators, which include lions, hyenas, jackals, cheetahs, and leopards, which sometimes requires a trained eye to spot. After enjoying a picnic at the crater,  you will return to Moshi. You will be taken to your hotel.

Meal Plan: Bed& Breakfast

Dinner & Overnight: Masailand Safari Lodge

Day 11: Transfer from the hotel to the airport

What people are saying about Sirikwa

Mount Kilimanjaro Such an incredible journey! The whole experience was perfect. Leone and Jonathon guided us safely, Abbas and Pray kept us fed, Mr. Machame carried the heaviest loads, Joshua and Ramadan and the rest of the group made sure we were comfortable. Thank you for the trip of a lifetime. We hope to see the entire crew again soon.

As Advertised Sirikwa handled everything. Very responsive and respectful, didn't need to worry about local or hidden fees. Exactly as advertised. The trek was great!

9 Day Safari + 4 Days in Zanzibar I highly, highly recommend Sirikwa Travel. My best friend and I did a nine day safari in Tanzania's northern circuit of national parks and then four days in Zanzibar. It was an absolutely amazing trip of a lifetime!

Susana

We had an amazing time during our journey to the summit of Lenana . It was really difficult but with the help and accurate direction of our guide , James, we were able to reach the summit just to eclipse our eyes with the sunrise. I will never forget the images and the feeling of accomplishment from the top . During our ascendant we had a wonderful team of driver , porters , cook and guide : Willis, bernard, terrace, Joseph, jackelin, Simon , Tim and James ; all of them gave to us a warm welcome, always smiling and making sure we were confortable and mostly safe. The only discomfort was at Shipton camp where the conditions are really precarious. It looks like no one care about honouring the beauty of nature that surround the camp. They ( rock mountain hotel ) should respect such a lovely location, be proud and take measurements to have a camp on the level that the site offers. We really felt like sleeping in a pig pen 1 toilet for 20 people with bumped beds with not ladders and no space between one another . Really it is a place that need URGENTLY a remake . With regard on the main agency EXPLORE-SHARE ; we experienced an issue post booking . We did not received clear information, our question where not answered , etc . Fortunately , Nicky came and sorted out everything for us ( grateful forever) she made the changes needed and we finally got the best ( Siriwa travel). In short “UNIQUE EXPERIENCE, where challenge is constantly surrounded by a great scenery in a huge National Park”. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
