Description

Challenge yourself to a day tour of via ferratas and traverse the beautiful Dolomite mountains in northern Italy.

Visit the less crowded climbing areas as we ascent the surroundings of Bolzano during a 1-day trip. Bolzano is the capital and largest city of South Tyrol, as well as being ranked as having the best quality of life in Italy.

We’ll be able to witness the stunning rock tower of Larsec, a largely unknown chain of mountains that stand to the east of the Rosengarten.

We will climb the two main via ferratas delle Scalette and Catinaccio d’Antermoia. These belong to the Gruppo del Catinaccio (or the Rosengarten Group), which is a massif with a peculiarly pink shade due to the presence of the dolomite mineral.

Its colour is a basis for the legend of King Laurin, an ancient ruler of dwarves who lived among the mountains, and lived in an underground palace. The entrance to the crystal castle contained a great rose garden. If anyone dared to pluck even a single flower, their hand and foot would be chopped off.

Due to the level of difficulty being intermediate, potential climbers are expected to have previous experience of via ferratas, and are also required to have a good level of fitness.

FAQs

What experience and skill level do I need to have?

This intermediate via ferrata can be quite challenging and require climbers to have previous experience and be in good physical condition.

What is the Guide:Client ratio?

Our expeditions have a 1:4 Guide to client ratio.

How can I prepare physically for this trip?

To prepare physically for a via ferrata trip, you should focus on building your endurance, strength, and flexibility. Hiking is a great way to build endurance and strength. Aim to hike for at least 3-4 hours per day. Weight training can help you build muscle strength and power. Focus on exercises that work your legs, arms, and core. You should also stretch all of your major muscle groups, including your legs, arms, back, and core. Aim to stretch for 10-15 minutes after each workout.

What is the best time of the year to embark on this trip?

The best time of year to embark on this via ferrata trip in the Dolomites is from June to September. During this time, the weather is generally mild. However, it is important to be aware that the weather in the Alps can change quickly, so it is always important to be prepared for all conditions.

Is this a group or private expedition?

It's private. Up to 4 people can join this via ferrata trip.

What kind of shoe/boot is recommended for via ferrata?

Hiking or approach shoes or boots with semi-rigid or fairly stiff sole are the ideal footwear for via ferrata, as you have to be comfortable climbing on metal ladder rungs and walking on rocks. Sneakers are not recommended, as they can be quite slippery.

Can I join a group tour to do a via ferrata?

Yes, I offer weekly group departures for the Alpini via ferrata near Cortina. You can check all the information here: https://www.explore-share.com/trip/1-day-via-ferrata-dolomites-cortina/

Mountain Guide

Hi! I'm Renato, IFMGA guide from the Dolomites, and I work together with my colleagues Robert, Patrick & Walter (German speaking), Paolo, Matteo and Davide.

If I'm not available to guide you, one of them will take care of you.

I was born in 1961, I live in Campitello di Fassa, in the Dolomites, together with my family. I have two sons, one is a mountain guide, the other is a ski instructor. I am a certified mountain guide since 1982, an instructor of guides, alpine ski instructor and a Federal coach for ISEF.

Being in the mountains has always been my passion, guiding people, teaching them climbing, mountaineering... during the various seasons of the year. I very much enjoy drawing nice curves in fresh powder snow and discover the charm of the frozen waterfalls.

My curriculum and professional mountaineering is made of many ascents and some openings of routes in the Dolomites and the Alps. I climbed in Yosemite Valley (California), Ben Nevis (Scotland) and Norway, Greece, Spain and Sardinia. I did also several high altitude climbs like Mt Denali (Alaska), Ama Dablam (6828m), Cho Oyu (8201m), Manaslu (8163m), Shivling in India (6545m), Cotopaxi and Chimborazo in Ecuador (5897m and 6310m), Patagonia (Argentina).

Feel free to get in touch with me if you are coming in the Dolomites for skiing (alpine, freeride and ski touring), rock climbing, sport climbing and multi pitch climbing. It will be my pleasure to guide you here and let you discover my secret spots.

What people are saying about this trip

Paolo, my guide, was incredibly supportive and friendly. He gave me lots of information about the area, the mountains and the local culture. He gave me lots of advice about how best to move through the ferrata, me feel super safe when I was unsure but also gave me the freedom to work out some of moves which is exactly what I wanted as I develop my climbing skills. He helped me to plan everything I needed as well as timings. I would honestly give him 10 out of 10. Abigail, my booking agent, was also fantastic. I had many many many questions (!) and she was so patient and informative.

Jay

Robert was a knowledgeable and experienced guide. But he could have been more helpful as we prepared and in explaining our options throughout. For example we asked how to get to the trail head since we didn't have a car and were told we need to take a taxi from bolzano with no other info. We found out after arriving in bolzano (from the place we were staying) that a taxi would be extremely expensive and that a bus could take us most of the way.

Jonathan

Matteo is a very nice guy, a young guide. It was unfortunate the weather did not cooperate on the first day but the second day was stunning. Given our self description of age fitness and experience, we were a bit surprised at the route chosen, which was more challenging than expected. An improvement on our next trip would be to be alerted to the need for more thorough equipment list, e.g. ideally we should have prepared climbing gloves for the via Ferrata; ideally we should have had climbing shoes of a particular specification (more toe protection, ankle coverage and support). Nevertheless we appreciated Matteo and the experience was what we had hoped for and certainly hope to return soon to experience other parts of the beautiful Dolomites.

Irina

Robert Cecco, our guide, was very attentive, caring, and knowledable . He assisted our family at every step of via ferrata and made sure we had a great trip! Thank you, Robert!

Amir

The trek was great. The guide (Robert) was not nice to say the least
