Discover the mesmerizing Mardi Himal Base Camp, located on the eastern side of the well-known Annapurna Base Camp trek. While not as widely known as its counterpart, the Mardi Himal trek is gaining popularity as one of the most sought-after treks in the Annapurna region.
This unique trekking experience beneath the towering Mardi Himal peak offers incredible views of majestic mountains such as Mt. Machhapuchhre, Mardi Himal, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Baraha Shikhar, and Himchuli.
Your Mardi Himal trek will begin once we arrive Pkhara after a scenic bus ride from Kathmandu. Upon reaching your destination, you will continue towards Pothana, where you will obtain the necessary permits for the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) and start your immersive trekking week across Nepal.
As you venture forth, you will traverse enchanting rhododendron forests within the ACAP region, making your way through Low Camp, High Camp. While walking along its less-traveled trail on an exposed ridge, you will be able to witness the magnificent Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges. On the southern side of the ridge, a verdant green landscape unfolds, showcasing the Modi River valley below and offering glimpses of charming villages such as Ghandruk, Chhomrong, Sinuwa, and Dovan.
Reach the Mardi Himal Base Camp and be amazed by the enchanting villages visible from here such as Machhapuchre Base Camp, Deurali, Dovan, Sinuwa, Chhomrong, Ghandruk, and the breathtaking Pokhara valley.
After indulging in the delightful experiences offered by these picturesque camps, you will retrace your steps, descending through High Camp and Low Camp until you reach Siding, and eventually return to Pokhara. Departing early in the morning from your hotel, you will embark on a drive along the Prithvi National Highway, heading towards Pokhara. As you travel, you'll catch glimpses of the Marsyangdi and Trishuli Rivers. After a journey of approximately 6-7 hours, you will arrive in Pokhara, situated at an elevation of 820 meters.
Renowned as a highly popular tourist destination in Nepal, Pokhara boasts a captivating array of attractions. The city has some stunning lakes, including Phewa, Begnas, and Rupa, where you can enjoy a boating experience. Pokhara also offers fascinating caves to explore, such as the Gupteshwor Cave and Bat Cave.
Following an early morning breakfast, your journey will start with a drive to Phedi. From there, you will walk on stone steps, terraced fields, and pass through charming villages and forests, ultimately reaching Dhampus. Once there, you will be able to enjoy a satisfying lunch. Afterward, the trek continues towards Pothana.
The trail to Pothana is a delightful and scenic descent, leading you through fragrant sandalwood forests. As you arrive, you will be able to gaze at the majestic Fishtail Mountain (Mt. Machhapuchhre). You will then obtain your ACAP Permit at the checkpoint. Today's trek spans approximately 3 hours.
Following breakfast, your trek will start from Pothana towards Pitam Deurali, through the red sandalwood and rhododendron forest. Along the trail, you will encounter small open pastures, including a buffalo grazing area. Crossing the pasture, you will then delve deep into a dense forest, embarking on a 2-3 hour uphill climb.
After a gentle descent, you will arrive at Forest Camp. En route to Low Camp, you will be treated to vistas of the Dhaulagiri and Manaslu mountain ranges. Forest Camp is a village nestled amidst lush green forests, offering campsites and lodges. On the western side of Forest Camp, you can enjoy panoramic views of Ghandruk, its neighboring villages, and the scenic Modi Valley.
Continuing your journey from Forest Camp, you will proceed to Low Camp. Situated amidst dense rhododendron forests, Low Camp features a flat terrain. After a long trek of 7–8 hours from Pothana, you will reach this serene location. From Low Camp, you will be able to witness Machhapuchhre and Mardi Himal.
After breakfast at Low Camp, you will trek through a trail that will lead you into beautiful rhododendron forests. You'll gradually ascend until you reach the lower viewpoint at an elevation of 3289 meters. Continuing along a grassy slope, you will make your way towards High Camp.
The trail to High Camp can be steep at times, with narrow paths and sections that pass through charming rhododendron forests. As you tread along the off-the-beaten path on an open ridge, you will be rewarded with views of the Annapurna and Machhapuchhre ranges. The southern side of the ridge reveals a lush green landscape, with the Modi River valley below and villages like Ghandruk, Chhomrong, Sinuwa, and Dovan in sight.
Continuing your trek, you will eventually reach High Camp, approximately 4 hours from Low Camp. High Camp serves as a natural viewpoint tower, with specacular vistas in every direction such as the majestic peaks of Mt. Machhapuchhre, Mardi Himal, Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Baraha Shikhar, Himchuli, and the southern slopes, including the Pokhara valley. You will then spend the night in a lodge at High Camp.
Today's journey will take you to the captivating Mardi Himal Base Camp. Be prepared for a more challenging trek compared to previous days, as the trail becomes steeper and uneven in parts.
After approximately 2 hours of trekking, you will reach the top ridge, also known as the Mardi Himal Base Camp. However, the true Mardi Himal Base Camp lies a further 2 hours' walk away from this ridge. Once there, you will be treated with views of Mardi Himal, Mt. Fishtail, Annapurna I, Gangapurna, and Annapurna III.
Furthermore, you can marvel at the picturesque villages like MBC (Machhapuchre Base Camp), Deurali, Dovan, Sinuwa, Chhomrong, Ghandruk, and the Pokhara valley from the Mardi Himal Base Camp (4500 m). The trek back to Low Camp will take approximately 3–4 hours. The total duration of today's trek is around 7–8 hours. You will spend the night in a lodge at Low Camp (3150 meters).
After enjoying a satisfying breakfast, you will set off towards Siding village (1280 meters). Today's trek involves mostly descending, making it relatively easy. The trail will lead you through forest shades and terraced fields, gradually descending to an altitude of 1600 meters. Along the way, you will witness the beauty of the upper Mardi Khola, a river originating from the pristine ice and snow of the Mardi Himal. Initially, the trail will take you through remote areas, away from tea houses.
The route will take you to an arm valley and charming villages. Trekking alongside the banks of the Mardi Khola, you will be surrounded by huge fields, traditional farms, and bridges. After approximately 4 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Siding. Following lunch, a private vehicle will transport you to Pokhara via Milan Chowk. You will spend the night at a hotel in Pokhara.
After enjoying an early breakfast at your hotel in Pokhara, it will be time for you to check out. You will then make your way to the Tourist Bus Park in Pokhara, where you will catch your tourist bus. The bus departs at 7 AM, offering you the opportunity to witness small towns along the way.
As you travel, you will be treated to views of rural settlements, lively rivers, terraced fields, and rural landscapes. After a 6-hour journey, you will arrive in Kathmandu and be transferred to your hotel. Later in the evening, one of the representatives from Mount Mania will invite you to a farewell dinner accompanied by a cultural show. Following the delightful dinner, you will return to your hotel for an overnight stay.
What fit should I be for this trip?
Trekking in the high-altitude regions of Nepal with challenging trails requires a basic level of fitness. It is important to engage in regular exercises, including cardiovascular activities like hiking, cycling, and swimming. These activities help improve the health of your heart, lungs, and joints, preparing you for the demands of the trek. It is recommended to start your training regime at least two weeks before embarking on the trek.
What does Teahouse Trekking in Nepal entail?
Teahouse trekking in Nepal involves staying overnight in teahouses or lodges along the trekking route. These teahouses provide accommodation and meals, allowing trekkers to travel with lighter backpacks. Teahouses can vary in comfort levels, ranging from cozy lodges in popular areas like Solu Khumbu to simple bamboo huts in the remote trails of western Nepal.
Can I hire porters for this trip?
For high altitude treks, it is possible to hire a porter who will shoulder the burden of carrying your luggage, including trekking and sleeping equipment. Engaging a porter greatly relieves you of the weight on your back. With a light daypack containing essentials like water, a camera, snacks, and rain gear, you can enjoy the trek while leaving the heavy load to be carried by the porter. It is worth noting that some guides also double as porters, offering a comprehensive assistance package.
