Description

I invite you to discover the authentic rural life, nature and wild coastline of southwestern Portugal, with this 7-day trekking tour through the Rota Vicentina Historical Way, in the beautiful and sunny region of the Algarve.

The Rota Vicentina is a network of hiking trails running in the south of Portugal, a place where culture and gastronomy merge with the ocean, Portugal. In the West, we will always be accompanied by the Atlantic Ocean and its idyllic sunsets; in the East, we will find the valleys, the rivers, the historic settlements and the cork oak forests.

This trek will take us through the Algarve region, distinguished from the rest of the Portuguese territory by hosting a large number of microclimates and geological territories. The history of this territory evokes the union with the cloudy Atlantic islands, the hot Magreb, the bright Andalusia and the rest of the European continent.

The Rota Vicentina is made up of two roads: the Historical Way, which seeks to restore the old path used by pilgrims, travelers and citizens throughout the region, and the Fishermen’s Way, which shows the importance of fishing along the coast, the main economic activity that has always supported the locals.

During this 5-day trek, we will be hiking on the Historical Way, which has been certified as a Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe by the the E.R.A. – European Ramblers Association, a certification given to the best hiking destinations in Europe.

The Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vicentine Coast Natural Park is the best preserved stretch of European coastline, with several species of unique fauna and flora. You can see here the rare fishermen’s eagles, and also the white storks, since it is the only place in the world where they nest in the cliffs of the sea.

Nature, rural life and mild climate, together with an average of 300 days of sunshine per year, make this region an unforgettable destination for lovers of sustainable tourism.

Around the year 1242, Aljezur was conquered by knights loyal to Paio Peres Correia, also known as Pelay Pérez, a notable Portuguese medieval conqueror who became master of the Order of Santiago. Legend has it that the victory of the conquest of the castle was partly due to the collaboration of the princess who betrayed her king.
