Description

Still away from the touristic itineraries, unknown to the trekkers community, the Eastern coast of Greenland is a land of adventure like no other: a landscape composed of fjords, icebergs, high mountains, glacier tongues and ice sheets!

The Schweizerland (which can be freely translated to “Swiss Alps”, discovered and named by the Swiss expedition of Alfred de Quervain in 1912) is a vast massif located on the Arctic Circle. These 3360m high mountains with strong reliefs are covered by enormous glaciers with names that can sound familiar: Glacier France, Glacier Franche-Comté, Glacier Paris, Glacier Pourquoi-Pas? These names witness the passage of a certain Paul-Emile Victor (mid-20th century french explorer).

A remarkable trip by its aesthetics, variety of landscapes (depending on whether one is close to the ocean or deeply engaged in the massif), the progression to “universes” even more singular:

– The beginning of the trek is characterized by deep and branched fjords, a coastline with a complex drawing, the tangling of land and sea and a maritime-alpine geography;

– The “Dry” valleys, isolated, framed by a succession of chaotic glacier tongues, high walls and Patagon-looking peaks;

– The unique atmosphere of the bottom of the Sermilik fjord – Greenland as we imagine it -, its waters loaded with an impressive density of growlers and icebergs released by the giant emissary glaciers of the ice sheet (the very famous Greenland ice cap), felted atmospheres when the mist blends itself with all this ice in transit, glowing lights in the camps when the Sun tangents with the horizon of the cap…

– Finally the passage, at the beginning and end of the trek, through small villages of the Ammassalik region allows us to discover the most isolated Inuit communities in Greenland.

This trek can be qualified as moderately difficult simply because it takes place in isolated and mountainous territory, and in total autonomy (once started, it is not possible to go back – except in cases of absolute necessity). The crossing of the highest passes demands the ability to move forward with a “large” bag in a high mountain type environment.

– Bag weight: 20 kg

– Duration of each stage: 6-8 walking hours

Highlights of the trek are:

– Wild and wonderful beauty of the Eastern Greenland coast (if you are only to visit Greenland once in your life, go to this side of the island!); an itinerary along the edges of one of the most impressive massifs in Greenland.

– A journey with very interesting landscapes, linking very different environments: a complex network of fjords and islands, high mountains and countless glaciers, ice sheets, icebergs and drifting ice…

– A sector that has rarely been visited since it requires one to be autonomous.

– A beginning and end of itinerary in 2 hamlets characteristic of the Eastern coast.

– Assurance to be in good company: with a small group of people known to the guide…

During the last 15 years, I spent more than 1100 days in raids and expeditions to polar and boreal regions. Among those, more than 500 days were dedicated to expeditions and I traveled more than 7000 km skiing or kite-skiing... But let's forget big words and try to explain the deep convictions behind what I do:
To research.. to guess... to reveal the aesthetic character of a place (the image that we see in a magazine, or book, or online, but also the topographical map are great "dream providers" and play an essential role when choosing destinations).
To project myself... to draw my own path. And once I'm on the field, to tack... to browse... to prospect... to explore... until I have a good and detailed mental image of the territory. Pure geographic curiosity. To which is added the assurance of finding, by listening, searching in the space, hidden gems.
Let's take Iceland as an example: at the same time vast and limited, incredibly rich topographically, this country is perfect for a "profound" journey. There, more than anywhere else, I zigzag, tack, climb, walk on the edges, approach the heart of the lava flows and of the canyons. Since that is where the soul of a territory is!
In Iceland, and actually everywhere, I am excited by the intimate knowledge of the terrain. And this is as well what my pictures will show.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
