Peña Santa de Castilla is one of the most beautiful and emblematic mountains in the Iberian Peninsula. It is located in the Picos de Europa mountain range in northern Spain. While it is overshadowed by Torrecerredo and Picu Urriellu in terms of altitude and fame, Peña Santa and its surroundings offer a more solitary and authentic mountain experience.
There are many ways to approach this immense mass of limestone rock, but one of the best ways to experience it is to hike around it. This route takes you through the heart of the Cornión, passing by the Jou Santu, an immense hole below the north wall of the crag, and the Puertos de Cuba, La Llerona, Jou Las Pozas, and Fuente Prieta.
One of the highlights of this route is the bivouac that is carried out at the foot of the immense southern wall of Peña Santa, in the green and docile meadows of Vega Huerta. From there, you can enjoy stunning views of the Central Massif, known by the locals as Los Urrieles, and the mountains of the Cantabrian Mountains.
The entire route can be completed in 1, 2, or 3 days, depending on your fitness level and how much time you want to spend exploring the area. There is also a Non Stop option for the bravest and most trained.
If you are looking for an alternative activity to the usual Picos Rings proposals and a less frequented route, then the Peña Santa de Castilla circular hike is a great option. Join me on this fantastic trekking journey, contact me today to reserve your spot!
Which is the best time of the year to do this trekking around Peña Santa?
From November till May Picos de Europa is usually covered with snow. Moreover, mountain huts remain closed from mid October till mid May, making logistics more complex. Therefore the best time of the year to visit this place is from May to October.

Since I was a child I loved and enjoyed spending time in nature running, hiking or biking.
I was born and grew up in Asturias, a mountain region in the north of Spain. I spent many time of my life discovering the Cantabrian mountain range and Picos de Europa.
The valleys, the mountain passes, the summits,... are places where we can test our physical, technical and mental aptitudes, living and sharing experiences and situations that make us grow as people both individually and collectively. Food for my soul. A space in which to connect with our inner self, leaving aside the unnecessary stimuli of everyday life. A haven of peace in which to feel our body and listen to our mind. A window from which to admire the great diversity that exists in nature. An opportunity to feel again part of it through a curious, humble and respectful attitude.
I have experience in Picos de Europa and other mountain regions of Asturias (Ponga, Redes, Ubiña,...). I have also travelled alongside other mountain ranges of Iberia, such as Pyrenees and Gredos. I also have hiked in other places of the world such as Torres del Paine, Chaltén and Ushuaia.
However, my radius of action is not limited only to the places I already know. One of the most important qualities of a mountain guide is his ability to prepare activities in unknown places and carry them out successfully. Interest in discovering new places, spirit of exploration, planning, ... are some of our strengths. So, even if the place you want to discover is not in our list, do not hesitate and write us. We will take care of everything and we will start with you to live the experience.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
