The Umbwe Route is awesome challenge for those with more climbing experience who want to reach the summit of Kilimanjaro. Join us on an 8-day ascent that you’ll remember forever.
This route is characterized by its fairly abrupt altitude gain early on. This is why you’ll need experience climbing at altitude to choose this option.
Our adventure will begin with a hike through the rainforest, where you’ll be able to take in all the beautiful flora and fauna. As we get higher up the mountain you’ll see the terrain change and eventually, we’ll be hiking past volcanos and glaciers.
Along the hike, you’ll be accompanied by our certified and experienced guides who will be able to help you out if you’re feeling the effects of the altitude. They’ll also be able to point out areas of interest on the way. You’ll also be traveling with a crew that will set up your camps as you go and take care of your meals.
The views along this route are fantastic and the panoramic vista from the summit is the icing on the cake.
Reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro really is a remarkable achievement. Sign up today!
If you’re looking for a slightly more gentle ascent be sure to check out our 8-day along the Rongai Route.
We’ll meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and bring you to your hotel where you’ll be able to rest before your pre-hike briefing.
Umbwe Gate of Kilimanjaro National Park (1,640 m) is the start point of the hike and also where you’ll register and get your permits. It’ll then take us around 5-7 hours to cover the 11 km to Umbwe Camp (2,930 m). We’ll take a gentle pace as you may begin to feel the effects of the altitude. Dinner made by our crew will be waiting for you at camp.
We’ll have an early start to make good time to Barranco Camp (3,960 m). Day 3 will see us cover 6 km over 4-5 hours and we may even start to see Meru Volcano if the weather is good. We’ll arrive at camp at around lunch and take the rest of the day to rest and acclimatize.
Another early start is in order to hike to Barranco Wall which is not a difficult hike. From there we’ll rest and get to take photos of the Kibo volcano. We’ll then continue on to Karanga Camp. This section is a bit more tricky with lots of ascents and descents. When you reach Karanga Camp (4,035 m) after 4-5 hours of hiking you’ll have a warm lunch and a couple of hours to rest. Then in the afternoon you’ll do an acclimatization hike towards the Barafu Camp.
After breakfast, we’ll spend 4-5 hours hiking the 6 km to Barafu Summit Camp (4,640 m). When we get there we’ll rest before we complete an acclimatization hike towards Kosovo Summit Camp (4,800 m). Once back at Barafu we’ll eat and sleep before our night summit.
Ascent day! We’ll start out at around midnight to climb to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). This climb is not difficult but the altitude can be an issue. At the summit, you’ll have some time to appreciate the awesome views and explore Kilimanjaro’s glaciers. We’ll then begin our descent to Millennium Camp (3,820 m) via Barafu Camp where we will rest for a couple of hours. This day entails hiking 15 km of terrain over 8–12 hours.
The final leg of our adventure will see us hike 12 km over 4- 5 hours towards Mweka Gate Park exit (1,640 m). There, you’ll get your certificates before we take you back to the hotel.
You’ll have some time to rest in the hotel before we drop you at the airport.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
