Join me on this truly epic, awesome and amazing 4-day hut-to-hut mountain biking tour on the South Island of New Zealand, where we will traipse and travail around the old gold mining trail called The Old Ghost Road, entailing riding past and through huge and vast valleys and rocky tops, mesmerizing waterfalls, tranquil waterways and the famous ghost town of Lyell.
The South Island of New Zealand is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Southern Hemisphere, as people are attracted to the sheer scale of its raw natural beauty, combined with a low population density and pleasant weather. The ghost town of Lyell, near the West Coast, was previously a thriving gold mining community in the 19th century.
Our trip begins in the hub town of Westport, and from there we head to the ghost town of Lyell, where we begin our first mountain biking section.
From here we ride up to Lyell Saddle Hut via lush green forest, thick vegetation and rocky fords, before heading onwards to Mt. Montgomery (1280m), which offers magnificent sweeping panoramic views, and then Ghost Lake Hut.
The next few sections entail step, tight and thrilling bits of trail, which then open up to the mighty Earnest Valley, with yet more superb views of the majestic peaks of the region, before heading through extremely rocky terrain and down to the waterways of Goat Creek Hut.
The last few parts of the trail involve riding through more thick forest which houses many exotic birds and animals, and the finishing the trip via several beautiful gorge crossings at a bush lodge in Seddonville.
By the end we will be weary, content and satisfied at having explored this gorgeous part of the world in a fun and unique manner.
Discovering this part of New Zealand on mountain bike is a truly unique and fun experience – book now to see what all the fuss is about!
