South Iceland guided hiking tour

Come to this 14-day hiking tour to visit the most special remote landscapes in the South of Iceland. We will visit the most incredible parts of the island!

14 Days

Jul, Aug

Description

The Northern lands and polar regions hold a wild, latent, almost frozen energy… But volcanoes in Iceland are the exception. They create disorder and destabilise the eye. They take us into a turbulent world, never completely peaceful…

For aesthetes, sensitive souls, photographers, painters… Icelandic sceneries are worth any detour. Reliefs and colours are unique.

I have been hiking in Iceland for almost 10 years. As time goes by, the desire to return becomes stronger. Also, I want to discover new places that I haven’t seen in my previous explorations.

Rather than a definite plan, I propose to you a “Best of”. In other words, an anthologie of the most remarkable areas. I don’t want to take you where everybody goes, but to explore some remote corners in the Southern side of Iceland. The South is where we find the special places in the island. For example, we will see completely atypical and incredibly diverse landscapes…

These are the highlights of the trip I propose to you:

  • The Snæfellsnes peninsula, basaltic columns in Arnarstapi.

  • The fumaroles, solfataras and impressive pastel colours of the Kerlingarfjöll Massif. The hot springs of Hveravellir.

  • The many lakes in Veidivotn, the muddy and mighty waters of the Tungnaá river.

  • The secret beauties of the Torfajökull caldera.

  • The big Langisjór lake the green Fögrufjöll hills, the mighty Skaftá river.

  • The Mælifellsandur black desert, the green turquoise waters of Hólmsárlón lake, the hot springs of Strutslaug, the Eldgjá failure.

  • The eruptive fissure of Lakagigar.

  • The eastern buttress of the Mýrdalsjökull icecap.

This hiking tour around Southern Iceland is an incredible experience. If it tempts you, contact me and let’s live it together!

During the last 15 years, I spent more than 1100 days in raids and expeditions to polar and boreal regions. Among those, more than 500 days were dedicated to expeditions and I traveled more than 7000 km skiing or kite-skiing... But let's forget big words and try to explain the deep convictions behind what I do:
To research.. to guess... to reveal the aesthetic character of a place (the image that we see in a magazine, or book, or online, but also the topographical map are great "dream providers" and play an essential role when choosing destinations).
To project myself... to draw my own path. And once I'm on the field, to tack... to browse... to prospect... to explore... until I have a good and detailed mental image of the territory. Pure geographic curiosity. To which is added the assurance of finding, by listening, searching in the space, hidden gems.
Let's take Iceland as an example: at the same time vast and limited, incredibly rich topographically, this country is perfect for a "profound" journey. There, more than anywhere else, I zigzag, tack, climb, walk on the edges, approach the heart of the lava flows and of the canyons. Since that is where the soul of a territory is!
In Iceland, and actually everywhere, I am excited by the intimate knowledge of the terrain. And this is as well what my pictures will show.

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
