Description

The Swedish Lapland, near the huge and wild Sarek nature park is crossed by the Royal trail, prestigious hiking of 400 m from north to south bordering Norway.

In winter, the northern part is especially popular (around 100 km). The highest Swedish mountains environment  (The Kebnekaise culminates at 2117 m), and the presence of a large number of reindeers, elks and grouses enhance the blank spaces.

There are very comfortable lodges on the route we take. There are often wide valleys without technical difficulties surrounded by glacial peaks. You will experience a great Nordic adventure beyond the Arctic Circle!

Highlights:
– A “classic” of the Nordic countries
– A real “Far North” dimension and its wildlife: deers, grouses, elks.

I propose the following program and route (8 days tour with 6 days of skiing).

Day 1: Flight GENEVE or LYON/STOCKHOLM/KIRUNA
(lodging in Kiruna)

Day 2: Transfer to ABISKO (1:30 h train).
Firstly, we have the final preparations for the great adventure. Then we leave the Abisko station and go under the portico of the royal path that indicates the start of the raid, we cross a birch forest and continue along a large frozen lake to the refuge ABISKOJAURE (altitude 480 m). Stage of 15 km, +150 m of altitude change.

Day 3: ABISKOJAURE – ALESJAURE
We climb in the valley between two mountains to arrive to a pass at 830 m, then by the shores of Alajärvi Lake we reach the Alesjaure refuge (780 m) located near a Lapp town, uninhabited in winter (you can even take a sauna!). Stage of 20 km, +350 m.

Day 4: ALESJAURE – SALKA
An easy route along a great valley, ending with the ascent to the Tiaktja refuge, which is located under the Tjaktjatjatja pass (1200 m). Then a long descent leads us to Salka (800 m) a huge valley surrounded by high glacial peaks, magnificent site. Stage of 25 km, +350 m.

Day 5: SALKA – KEBNEKAISE
We’re heading south to meet the Singi refuge and its Lapp village, then passing under the walls of Singit Jakka we enter in the Kebnekaise massif, the highest mountain in Sweden (2117 m). The refuge (680 m) which has the same name is very comfortable (shower, sauna, restaurant). Stage of 25 km, +400 m.

Day 6
Hiking in A/R starting from the refuge to Darfaljavari Lake (500 m of altitude change) or to the Stor glacier (800 m), then back to Kebnekaise refuge where we spend the night.

Day 7: KEBNEKAISE – NIKKALUOKTA
Last easy step with a long descent into the Laddjuvaggi valley, we follow a river lined with birches, then following the shores of a large lake we arrive to Nikkaluokta. Finally a transfer to KIRUNA by bus where we spend the night (hotel). Stage of 20 km, -300 m.

Day 8
Return flight to GENEVA or LYON or PARIS

Level: medium to good skier. Good endurance and good physical fitness are required. The technical level with good snow is not very difficult but it is better to be comfortable in all circumstances, because the weather changes very quickly and can be difficult in these latitudes. Good technical skills on hilly reliefs which do not always have traces. Stages from 4 to 6 / 7 hours skiing, with some altitude change (to + 400m).
