Description

Located in the Kanagawa prefecture, Mt.Oyama, which stands like a Pyramid, has been an object of worship since ancient times, and was visited by 200,000 worshipers a year during the Edo period.

Mount Oyama stands at 1,252 metres above sea level, and it's located in the Tanzawa-Ōyama Quasi-National Park. It's a popular hiking route, with easy access, and rich in culture, nature and history.

On the day of the hike, we will meet at Isehara station(by Odakyu line, 1 hour from Shinjyuku station)in the morning. We take the bus or taxi together to Mt. Oyama station and take cable to Shimosya (650m). We will hike up Mt. Oyama taking 2 hours and come round back to Shimosya taking 2 more hours.

This trip is open for all skill levels, but you must be ready and fit enough to hike 5 hours, an up and down 600m steep slope. The reward is a great day hike with awesome views in a mountain that's full of history.

FAQs

What is the average distance and altitude gain that we will hike each day?

From Shimosya, 600m taking 2 hours. Without Cablecar, need more 200m. (4km oneway)

What experience do I need to have? How fit do I need to be? Is this program suitable for children or older people?

It's fine for physically fit children over 10 years old. It's popular mountain, but there are many steep slopes.

How can I get to the trailhead/meeting point?

https://x.gd/VkrqR Isehara Station (Odakyu-Line) It takes about 70 min from Shinjuku by express train.

How will accommodation and meals be handled during the trek?

There is a convenience store at the station. If it is a weekday and it is not busy, easy to go to a cafe in the mountains.

Are there any other special requirements such as permits/insurance/vaccines that I need to consider before the tour?

None

What is the best time of the year for this hike?

I recommend October to December and March to May. Winter is also good as long as it doesn't snow or freeze and you have a good chance of seeing Mt. Fuji.. The rainy season and summer are terrible. Let's go to Mt. Fuji.

Can I join a group?

For now, I am only accepting applications from individuals. I am not confident in my leadership skills to bring together many different people.

What happens in the event of bad weather?

If the weather is bad, it will be slippery and I will cancel the tour. The weather forecast predicts rain for more than half a day. The date is free, so from the meeting point, I also will accept you if you go for a drive and walk a historic walkway around Mt. Oyama or somewhere.

Koji was a perfect guide! Not only did he showed us the region and explained all the cultural contexts around it, he also made us feel safe throughout the entire expedition. Climbing Mount Fuji was no easy task - but Koji made it look like it, and with a smile on his face at all times. He was attentive to our needs and health, especially the kids, and took us to the top and back as planned - and on time :)

I did not go on this climb. Rather, I arranged this climb for my 20 and 22 year-old children. I had initially booked them on a group trip but when I was contacted about Koji's private trip on a less traveled side of the mountain, I talked it over with my kids and decided to change to Koji's trip. I have no regrets. The kids liked Koji and felt safe with him. They had a great experience overall, despite altitude sickness and lack of shade. Koji was a wonderful communicator with all of us. Highly recommend.

My wife and I climbed Mt. Fuji in August 2018 with Mr. Koji Takahashi who guided us on the 2-day hike to see sunrise from the top of Mt. Fuji. Koji-san was very friendly and professional. He explained everything well and made sure we had a safe and enjoyable hike. We had an amazing climbing experience and our guide, Koji-san, played a big part in making it a fulfilling experience.
