However, they are not as know as other parts. Thus, walking through them is a more intimate experience since they are less crowded than other places.
Sajambre is a wonderful place brimming with dense and enchanting forests. But, it also has some of the best views of the peaks around it.
Valdeón on the other hand has also many dazzling woods. Nonetheless the mountainous terrain covers most of its territory, as it is the door to important mountains like the Western and Central Massif of the Park.
On this wonderful adventure, we’ll reach the summit of Jario Peak, a privileged viewpoint in the Cantabrian Mountains. We’ll also have the opportunity to see many amazing species. Some of the trees that inhabit this place are the oak and beech. But we’ll find ash, holly, haze, lime, yew, birch, steal and chestnut trees too.
Moreover, we’ll run into curious creatures all across our hike. The most iconic animal from the Cantabrian Mountains we might see is the brown bear. We may also come across chamois, wild boar, or deer. Also, we could spot wolves, a marten, wild cat, genet, otter, ermine, badger or a fox. Additionally, there are many birds abundant in this region. So we could see a griffon vulture, egyptian vulture, ravens, crows, sparrows or choughs. We may even spot a royal eagle or a peregrine falcon.
Finally, the place I’ve chose to lodge, the Vegabaño shelter, is one of the best and most hospitable shelters in Picos de Europa.
So search no more and send me a request. I promise it will be an amazing adventure! Do you want a different adventure? Check this Toubkal ascent and 8-day trekking in the Sahara trip.
We’ll begin our adventure at Soto de Sajambre (900m), one of the most beautiful mountain villages in the Picos de Europa Park. Then we’ll head into the forest until we reach Los Porros viewpoint. After that, we'll reach Vegaño Hut, from where we’ll climb Jario Peak (1,912m). for the best views of the region. Amongst many of the places you’ll get to admire from this Peal, are the Western and Central Massif and the Peña Santa de Castilla. Finally, we’ll end our day’s adventure heading back to the Vegabaño Shelter where a delicious dinner and a good night sleep await you.
We leave the refuge, crossing the valley to enter a beautiful beech forest and head towards the Barcinera pass, where we turn off towards the Beza pass, where we can see a large part of the Sajambre valley and the peaks of Jarrio, Peña Ten and Peña Pileñes, among others. From here, we ascend to the peaks of Peña Beza (1,958m) and Canto Cabronero (1,956m), excellent viewpoints overlooking the nearby peaks of Peñas Santas and the Cordillera. We will end our day walking back to Soto de Sajambre.

I love mountains and nature in general and from my experience and supported by my training, I like to enjoy them and make my clients enjoy them as much as I do, giving them the security they need to perform the activity they want, interpreting the landscape , flora, fauna, ethnography, and promoting respect for nature and the environment where activities take place. I speak Spanish and English.
From my company, Picos Outdoor, we organize activities of hiking, trekking, mountaineering, orientation, etc. and we offer introductory and specialization training courses (can be for groups and individuals) related to all the above.

I came with my best friend who didn't have much outdoor experience. The entire walk was nice, the weather was half rain half sunny, but nature was super nice and clean. The mates we had in the group are cool, all in all, with Ruben a super experienced guide, we had a lovely hiking which we will remember!

Fantastic trek with a very knowledgeable and experienced guide who puts safety first. A little late season snow and ice led to some challenging descents and Reuben made all the right choices in the interest of client safety. Spectacular scenery and Refugio hospitality and group friendliness made it a memorable experience.

Excellent mountain hiker. Not a good guide. Leaving little to no time for stops and rest and provided no help when things turned bad in the 3dr day of the hike

From the beginning to the end, Ruben and the Explore-Share team were fantastic. Ruben made the 4 day hike enjoyable, educational, and overall a ton of fun. He was super knowledgeable and even during the toughest part of the hikes, we felt incredibly safe. Very thankful for finding explore-share and I'll definitely use them again. I also would be sure to recommend Ruben to anyone looking to hike the Picos!
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
