Description

Hatun Machay, or ‘Big Cave’, is a fascinating geological rock formation in the magnificent Peruvian Andes. This stunning site is a National Cultural Heritage containing ancient archaeological remains and is situated at about 4,200 metres above sea level.

Described as a rock forest, Hatun Machay is placed on the western edge of the beautiful Cordillera Negra and about 60km from Huaraz. These granite rock faces offer fantastic climbs of varying difficulties and with epic views of the Andes landscape.

On the morning of the trip, we will collect you from your hotel in Huaraz and then drive about 90 minutes to Hatun Machay. The area for climbing is called ‘stone woods’ due to the aesthetics of the stone structures and is a truly remarkable landscape to witness.

There are over 40 bolted climbs on offer that come in varying difficulties. There are also archaeological remains and rock paintings to discover, of which their origin is still a mystery.

We recommend letting us lead you on a hike of about an hour and a half around the stone woods to fully appreciate its beauty and history.

Bear in mind that I provide this trip both as a group trip and a private tour. The price stated is for 1 person to join one of our group tours. Please don’t hesitate to contact us regarding prices for private programs.

My name is Edwin, professional Mountain Guide, member of Mountain Guides Association of Peru (AGMP) and Member of the International Union of Mountain Guides Association (UIAGM), specialized on Trekking, Climbing, Expeditions also I am the founder of Andes Travel Expeditions company.
