Description

Sitting just north of the Greek border, the Rhodope Mountains are one of the best spots for hiking in Bulgaria!

And over the course of the following 5 days, we will find out exactly why these rugged mountain peaks and verdant valleys are considered one of Europe’s last true wildernesses.

The fun begins shortly after we meet up at the airport in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital. From here, we will make the 3-hour drive southeast to Kurdzhali, at the eastern end of the range.

After visiting a local museum, the adventure really begins as we head into a boat and sail across Kardjali Lake and into the mountains, enjoying phenomenal views and getting the chance to see some local wildlife as we sail.

Each of the following days will be spent heading out by boat and/or on foot to explore various parts of the mountain range. We will hike no more than 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) per day, making this trip ideal for families with small children.

Among the various sites we will see are Konev’s waterfall, ancient lava flows and some Thracian archaeological sites.

Along with enjoying the phenomenal scenery, we will also have the chance to learn about the area’s unique history and culture as well as see local wildlife, including roe deer, the Griffon vulture and the Egyptian vulture.
