Situated on the southern tip of Japan’s stunningly scenic Rebun Island, hiking around the Momoiwa Observatory is the perfect way to experience the island’s natural beauty.
After meeting up at the observatory, the fun begins. Depending on whether you decide to head on our morning or afternoon tour, we will visit various spots on the island, taking in impeccable views of Mt Rishiri as well as the native wildflowers that adorn the island.
(Please note for the morning trip, you will need to take the bus to the observatory trailhead and make the brief hike to the observatory. For afternoon trips, we can pick you up at the ferry or your accommodation.)
Regardless of what time you decide to join us, we will begin our 3 hour excursion by hiking down into the Kinbai no tani Valley before passing Mt Tsubane and eventually reaching the Motochi todai Lighthouse.
Along the way, we will see the unique Neko-Iwa (cat shaped rock), the Momo-Iwa (peach shaped rock) as well as get gorgeous views of the might Mt Rishiri on the neighboring island of the same name.
If you head on the morning trip, we will hike from the lighthouse down to the ferry terminal, where the trip will end (overall hiking distance of 5.5 kilometers.
For participants on the afternoon trip, we will make a circuit back to the observatory (3.4 kilometers).

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area.
