Description

Rising to 1,898 meters (6,227 feet) in elevation, Mt Yotei is the highest peak on Hokkaido and makes for an incredible ski touring destination!

Starting out early in the morning – we will pick you up from your accommodation at 7 am – we will head to the foot of the mountain and begin hiking up to its summit.

As we begin to ascend up the side of the peak, we'll go through a wonderful forest covered by snow. After about 4 to 6 hours, we will be at the summit crater and switch out our hiking gear for ski touring gear.

Once we’ve got all of our gear on, we will drop into the crater and begin skiing over the plentiful and fluffy powder.

We’ll spend the rest of the day hiking and skiing through the 700-meter wide crater. As we go, we’ll be sure to enjoy plenty of incredible views out over Hokkaido.

Depending on how the day goes and what we manage to do and see, we will always have the option to extend the trip in order to see and explore more of this incredible place.

Once we’ve had our fill on top of the mountain, we will ski back down to the cars and head back to the hotel.

What skiing experience do I need to join this tour?

To join this tour, you should have previous skiing experience or at least be comfortable skiing in off-piste conditions, including powder and steep terrain. The hike up Mt. Yotei can take about 4-5 hours depending on fitness, so good endurance is also important. If you're less experienced in touring, it may be challenging to reach the summit.

Can I rent the necessary ski or avalanche gear?

Yes, you can rent all necessary touring and avalanche gear, including skis and avalanche safety equipment, in Niseko. I can provide you with a list of rental shops once you book the trip.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If the weather conditions are poor, we can reschedule for another day or opt for an alternate location, such as Shiribetsu, which also offers great touring terrain and safer conditions. If the entire region has bad weather, cancellation may be an option.

What is included in the price?

The price includes the guiding fee and transportation to and from Mt. Yotei. However, skiing gear, skinning gear, and avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe) are not included. You will need to rent or bring your own.

How many lines can we ski into the crater?

Typically, if conditions and your fitness allow, we can ski 2 to 4 lines into and out of the crater in a single day. The number of runs depends on the weather and your pace.

From a very young age I’ve had a strong connection with the mountains and nature. Although I grew up in the city, I used to travel to the countryside quite a lot. At the beginning, I approached the mountains in the summer time, hiking, trekking, sleeping in mountain huts, climbing and doing that kind of things. Later on, I started skiing and I just couldn't stopped: I became addicted to the snow!!

Back-country skiing started to grow on me when I was working in the Lake Tahoe ski area. I can still remember the feeling of the first few times I went to the backcountry on my skis, going up and down several peaks with no people around me except for my group of friends and away from the crowds of the resorts. It was fantastic!

After several year of backcountry skiing in Argentina (near Bariloche) and USA (Lake Tahoe), I made it to Niseko, Japan. I have been skiing, teaching, and guiding in Japan for the past 4 years. The snow here is unbelievable and the skiable terrain is huge and diverse. In the Niseko area you can find everything, from easy off-piste near the resort to several days backcountry skiing out there and lots of volcano skiing. Come on, just contact me and let’s go skiing!!
