10 Days

Description

The main aim of this trip is to reach the 5896-meter summit of the Nevado de Chañi**. Are you ready?**

During the way up to the Nevado de Chañi, we will cross landscapes of yunga, mountain and puna. As we ascend, the vegetation will decrease allowing us to admire pastures, high Andean steppes, until all vegetation completely disappears.

Cerro Chañi or better known as Nevado de Chañi, is the highest peak of the Jujuy’s Andes, North Argentina. This mountain also serves as a boundary between Salta and Jujuy provinces.

The first climbers to reach the Nevado Chañi were the primitive inhabitants of the zone, who climbed with a religious sense. In fact, in 1905 a group of explorers found a dead body on the top of the mountain. It was a 5-year old boy mummified with all his trousseau, probably a human sacrifice.

However, the first sports climbs also date back to the early 20th century. The first climb was led by Federico Reichert in 1904, considered the father of Argentine climbing since then.

This 10-day expedition up to the top of the Nevado Chañi consists in a high mountain adventure suitable for people physically prepared as well as those with a good prior experience in mountaineering. Each new day we must face at least 4 or 5 hours of ascent. There will be some days with a total hiking time of 10 hours.

After breakfast we will leave in direction to Los Mimbres. This day we will have to ascend from 2631 to 3596 meters of altitude, passing through Ovejera. We will arrive in the afternoon and spend the night in the house of the family of Nicanor Gutiérrez.

Day 4: Los Mimbres – Free day with some acclimatization in the campsite

Only those who wish to, can make a reconnaissance of the place and ascend the viewpoint hill of 4130 meters of height. This day serves us to acclimatize and test us in height, since the puna of the place makes us feel more tired due to dry air.

After breakfast we will go to Puesto Ángela, an old grazing place, where we will set up our camp for the night.

Day 8: Summit day

We will leave at 5 AM towards the summit. This day is key to overcome the last stage to the top of the Chañi. We will have slopes of up to 40º with a lot of slab stone. Before the appearance of snow and ice, we must place crampons and use pickaxe of crossing. Once we get the summit, we will have a brief celebration and leave our testimony and we will descend to the Refugio de los Militares to spend the night.

Day 9: Mountain Hut - Los mimbres

After breakfast, we will leave for Los Mimbres. Night in Los Mimbres.

What people are saying about Luis

Excellent service!

test

My rating for the winter ascent of Lanin volcano is 10/10 in every possible aspect. Luis organized perfectly well the whole ascent and assembled a great team of guides (Ramiro, Gabriel and Jonathan) who came with him to the mountain. The day before, we met in San Martin to check the equipment. On day one, after the hike up to the refuge, we went over the techniques and gear needed for the summit day (self-arrest, avalanche safety equipment, etc.). Summit day is demanding, but exceptional! The views from the summit include Villarica, Llaima and Copahue volcanoes to the north, and Tronador, Puntiagudo and Osorno to the south. Booking through Explore-Share was very smooth and easy, the customer service is the best!
