Description

Mount Shasta is one of the largest volcanoes in the continental United States. With an elevation of 14,179 feet (4,321 m), it is the second-highest peak in the Cascade Range, and the fifth-highest of California. This mountain offers a perfect terrain for adventure lovers. In this 3-day trip you will reach its summit under expert guidance.

We will head up Casaval Ridge route, considered the longest and most aesthetic ways to reach the top of Shasta. Steep and technical, it is best climbed with a lot of snow pack. The route runs up the southwest side of the mountain, ending at the beginning of the Whitney Glacier. A lot of crags and spires provide a real adventure feeling.

The last important eruption of Mount Shasta may have occurred about two centuries ago. But it still release volcanic ash, pyroclastic flows or dacite and andesite lava. We can find fumaroles on the mountain, which show that this volcano is still alive.

Cloaked in glaciers and boasting epic displays of lenticular cloud formations, in Shasta you will enjoy spectacular views of a natural alpine landscape, while climbing a challenging mountain.

So, what are you waiting for? Please contact us and attempt the summit of Mount Shasta with us. We’ll be glad to guide you in this mountain that we know so well!

This trip will be operated by one of the 3 permit holder outfitters: Shasta Mountain Guides, Alpine Skills International and SWS Mountain Guides.

FAQs

Snow or ice climbing experience and previous mountaineering experience are helpful but not required. Hiking and or Backpacking experience is needed. Good to excellent physical condition is a must.

What is the best time of the year to climb this mountain?

Best time is in early to late Spring, when there is plenty of snow coverage on the spiny ridge.

What is the guide-to-client ratio to climb this mountain?

3 climbers per guide. The group might be as large as 6 people (with 2 guides).

How far in advance should I start training and what kind of training do you suggest?

Participants must be in excellent physical condition. Backpacks will weigh between 45 to 65 pounds. With a day pack, you must be comfortable climbing 500-600 ft elevation gain per hour for 6-8 hours at a time. While the distance traveled on the ascent is approximately 7 miles, you’ll gain 7,302 ft vertical feet from the trailhead. Summit day alone will have over 4,000 vertical feet and cover about 3 miles. Our camp location is generally between 9,500 – 10,000 feet; if you’re concerned with altitude sickness, please email us! We have several techniques that can help you

to avoid, or at the very least, minimize adverse reactions to altitude.

Will there be porters to help to carry group and personal equipment?

No porters.

Are there any other special requirements such as permits/insurance/vaccines that we need to consider before the tour?

Permits are mandatory and included in the price. We take care of getting all the required permits for our participants. Insurance is not included and highly recommend. Explore Share has a partnership with a rescue and insurance company, they can assist you with this.

Can I join a group?

Yes, groups are available. Guiding ratio is 3:1. Max group size i 6 people (with 2 guides)

Will I need to bring any technical equipment of my own? Is it possible to rent equipment, and if so, what would be the approximate cost of that?

Yes, you'll need to bring your personal gear. Please read the section "What's included" or " Price details". Some items might be available for rent. You'll receive a complete gear list upon booking confirmation.

How will accommodation and meals be handled on the mountain?

We provide meals while on the mountain. These include breakfasts, freeze-dried dinners, and hot beverages. We have a variety of meal options available. However, we cannot guarantee specific choices of flavors, brands, or dishes (Ex: fettuccine, lasagna, teriyaki chicken & rice, etc.). If you have a favorite breakfast or dinner that only requires hot water, we encourage you to bring it. Also, bring your favorite high-calorie, high-carbohydrate lunches and snacks! The town of Mt. Shasta has a few grocery stores and markets, but having things you’re familiar with and in hand when you meet your guide is essential.

Examples: bagels, cheese, dried fruit, trail mix, Protein bars, chocolate, etc.

Note: you will need approximately 200-300 calories per hour (7-9 hours on summit day alone!).

Where do I stay before/after the climb? How do I get there?

Mt. Shasta is a great mountain town with several options on where to stay.

The Sacramento Airport (SMF) and Medford International Airport (MFR) are excellent jumping off points.
