Description

Come with us on an awesome Kilimanjo experience to remember. One of our guides will accompany you to the summit over a week via the Machame Route, helping you to make the very most out of this unforgettable experience.

The Machame Route is a great route as it allows for good acclimatization. It actually has one of the highest success rates of reaching the summit. Because it is such a great route it can sometimes be very popular. We’ll overcome the crowds by getting nice early starts!

This route, however, is not easy, there are some tricky sections of the trail with sharp inclines and descents. The beautiful scenery more than makes up for the difficulty though, this includes the Shira Plateau and the lush rainforest. Then there’s the highlight- the panoramic views from the summit.

We’ll hike with an awesome crew who’ll help us set up camp and prepare our meals, so you’ll just have to focus on hiking, resting, and having fun.

Climbing the highest mountain in Africa really is the opportunity of a lifetime. Don’t miss your chance, sign up today!

If you’re interested in a more secluded route to the summit, check out our 8-day trip following the Umbwe route.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival

We’ll pick you up from Kilimanjaro Airport and take you to your hotel. Once you’re settled in, you’ll meet with your guide for a pre-trip briefing.

Day 2: Machame Gate To Machame Camp

The start of the hike is at the Kilimanjaro National Park’s  Machame Gate (1,800 m) entrance and we’ll drive there. After you register and receive your permit we’ll begin hiking. Our first day will see us hike for 5 km to Machame Camp (3,010 m) over 5–6 hours

Day 3: Machame Camp To Shira Camp

After breakfast our hike towards Shira Camp (3,845 m) will begin. After trekking through the rainforest for the first day and a half, we’ll come out the other side and see the Shira Plateau. This makes for some awesome views.

We’ll walk at a gentle pace because at this point the altitude might be impacting you. Then, when we reach Shira Camp we’ll take the time to rest. We will have covered 5 km over 4-5 hours.

In the afternoon we’ll take an acclimatization hike towards Lava Tower Camp before retuning back down for dinner.

Day 4: Shira Camp To The Lava Tower and Descent To Barranco Camp

The journey to the Lava Tower (4,630 m) from Shira Camp is a tricky one with lots of ascents and descents. We’ll have lunch at Lava Tower. This is key for acclimatization purposes. After lunch we’ll descend to the Barranco Camp (3,960 m) which will be our home for the night. On this day we’ll cover 11 km and it will take roughly  6–8 hours.

Day 5: Barranco Camp To Barafu Camp

We’ll get an early start in on day 5 to start our journey to the summit of Barranco Wall. After that we’ll get awesome views of the Kibo Volcano. We’ll then continue on to Barafu Camp (4,640 m)  to have dinner and rest before our night ascent to the summit. This is one of the more difficult days, we’ll cover 11km but this time over 8- 10 hours.

Day 6: Uhuru Peak and Descent to Millennium Camp

Our adventure to the summit begins at midnight from Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). The altitude makes this last stretch but you’ll almost be there! The views from the summit are amazing and you’ll have time to soak it all in and also take in the nearest glacier. From there you’ll return to Barafu for a rest before descending further to Millennium Camp (3,820 m). This is a long day. You’ll be hiking anywhere from 8- 12 hours covering 15 km of ascents and descents.

Day 7: Millennium Camp to Mweka Gate

Day seven is your final day of hiking and is all descent. It’ll take us around 4-5 hows to cover the 12 km to Mweka Gate (1,640 m). There, you’ll get your certificate and we’ll drive you back to your hotel.

Day 8: Departure

You’ll be able to rest at your hotel until we take you to the airport for your flight home.

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Man

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Valeriya

You’re simply the best!!! :))) Explore-Share made everything easy and stress-free. Will definitely use again.

Joshua

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Cami

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
