The Kola Peninsula stretches over 100,000 km2 in the northwest of Russia, within the Arctic Circle. Its western region is dominated by two mountain ranges: the Lovozero and the Khibiny massifs. While its mountains are not particularly high, the latter holds the highest peaks in the peninsula: Yudychvumchorr (1,201m) and Chasnachorr (1,191m). With an oval shape and a surface area of about 1,300 km2, the Khibiny Massif covers the central part of Kola at a relative elevation of 900-1,000 meters above the surrounding plain.
Our trip’s meeting point will be the old imperial Russian capital of Saint Petersburg. From there, we will take an overnight train to the town of Apatity and then a private bus to the town of Kirovsk, our splitboarding tour’s starting point. Kirovsk is located in the Murmansk Oblast region, in the heart of the Kola Peninsula.
During 10 days, we will ride on alpine tundra terrain, spending the nights in mountain huts. We will traverse across deep silent canyons, vast snow-covered plains and forests, climbing steep slopes, often capped by glaciers or ice fields. We will enjoy long descents through wild soft mountains, with amazing views. Our luggage and equipment will be transported by snowmobiles from hut to hut. For your reference, below you will find the trip’s detailed itinerary.
Murmansk is one of the world’s top destinations to watch the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), the fluorescent natural phenomenon that ignites the night sky in the Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. The best time of the year to watch this light show over Kola Peninsula’s white snowy mountains is from mid-August to the end of April.
If more than 4 people would like to go on the trip, an assistant guide will join us for up to a total of 10 guests.
