“The King’s Levada”, Day hike from São Jorge (Santana) to Ribeiro Bonito in Madeira

Join me on this hiking trip and we’ll follow the trail of the King’s Levada to explore the fantastic natural spots on the island of Madeira!

One of the main attractions of Madeira is the impressive irrigation system that was built in the 16th century and crosses the entire island. This superb example of engineering consists of multiple levadas or water channels that will allow us to discover some of the most beautiful spots on the island by foot. If you love hiking and are coming to Madeira, you can’t miss this opportunity!

During this day hike, we’ll follow the King’s Levada and go deep into a wonderful valley full of beautiful natural spots. We’ll reach a stream called Ribeiro Bonito and relax while listening to the sound of water and birds. Also, we’ll have the pleasure to go across a waterfall on the way.

Our itinerary consists of a roundtrip from São Jorge, in Santana, to Ribeiro Bonito, next to the King’s Levada. During this full-day program, we’ll cover a distance of 10 kilometers and spend 3 hours hiking. Although the level is not demanding, keep in mind it’s important to be physically fit.
