A trip to Rangitoto Island is the perfect day trip if you’re spending some time in Auckland. Getting there via kayak on a guided trip is even better.
Visible from Auckland city centre, Rangitoto Island, and its symmetrical peak has become a symbol of the area. Auckland actually has 48 volcanic cones. Rangitoto is the largest and at around 600 years old, is also the youngest.
Before you jump in your kayak, we’ll give you an overview of the plan for the day. We’ll also run you through everything you need to know safety wise. You don’t need experience for this trip, our guide will show you the ropes. However, you will need a base level of fitness and you’ll need to know how to swim.
When we arrive at the island we’ll trek to the summit. This is a moderate one hour hike. On the way, we’ll see beautiful native birds and observe the largest pohutukawa forest in the world. From the summit, we’ll be able to take in the views of the Auckland area.
Once we’re done with our hike we’ll get back in our kayaks and paddle back to Auckland.
