Alps
+1 Day
Jan, Feb
The Gastein Valley / Gasteiner Tal located in the the Salzburg Land region is for sure one of the best spots in the Alps for ice climbing enthusiasts.
To me, climbing on icy waterfalls is one of the most funny forms of mountaineering. It is really amazing and very diversified. The natural structure of the formations is very unusual and varied, like no other natural source, other than ice. And that’s the interesting thing. You always discover something new. The ice is not the same as the day before or the year before, often the structure of the ice changes within hours.
I’m coming from the region of the Gasteiner Tal and it will be my pleasure to have you with me for one or several days for discovering and enjoying some unique ice climbing sessions. Due to my years of work in the teaching team of the Austrian mountain guide association, I gained a lot of experience and knowledge in the field of ice climbing.
The key spots of the area include Spieglein an der Wand, Solo für Zwei and Höhkarfall.
The Gastein valley offers ice climbing spots for all levels and with different accessibility to the ice falls, from 5 minutes to 2 hours walk in very remote places.
For beginners:
You will receive a thorough training about the use of ice axes and crampons, and safety techniques. Through “learning by doing,” you´ll get the necessary security and familiarity with ice.
For advanced climbers
You always wanted to climb through a waterfall, mild or extreme? No problem. In a two or three rope team your wish shall be fulfilled. It is definitely worth a try!
Based on the conditions, the time you have and your flexibility, we can also go for some other great spots of the area like Federweiss, Fenstergucker, Mordor and Spiegelkabinett.
I will provide all the ice climbing equipment, except ice climbing boots.
I will take maximum 4 persons with me. If you are with a larger group, I will ask a friend of mine, IFMGA mountain guide as well, to join us.
The best period to do ice climbing in the Gasteiner Tal is in January and February.
You plan to come in the Salzburg Land during the next winter? You want to try ice climbing or learn new technics to improve your skills? Then get in touch with me and let’s discuss about your wishes. I will define a tailor made program for you making sure you go back home with great memories.

I had a great time. The warm weather made challenging to find ice, but Gernot found us a fun and exciting pillar. He gave me lots of good tips to help me improve my technique. I would definitely recommend the Bad Gastein area for ice climbing.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
