Hiking day to Frey Hut by Cerro Catedral ridge

If you ask anybody in Bariloche which is the best mountain hut to visit, the answer will be the same: Frey Hut. This refuge is located in the heart of the Cerro Catedral, a big mountain surrounded by an incredible bunch of rocky towers and next to the beautiful Toncek Lagoon.

The top three reasons why I like to take my clients and friends to the Frey Hut by the Cerro Catedral ridge are:

• Its is an easy but authentic mountain trekking;

• You’ll cross different environments in just one day;

• As we use ski lifts this program is suitable for beginners as well.

As for the itinerary, we’ll start early in the morning to take the ski lift at the base of the Catedral mountain and ascend 1981 meters. Once up there we’ll start the hike. We’ll walk all the way through the mountain ridge, contemplating incredible and iconic Patagonian landscapes such as Mount Tronador or the Rucacco Valley. Then we’ll descend towards the Schmoll Lagoon before arriving to the Frey Refuge.

After having lunch at the hut and spending a while appreciating the rocky spires around, we can take a bath and swim in the Toncek Lagoon (if the weather helps). Finally, we’ll descend through a beautiful Patagonian forest and return to the starting point.
