Description

Join me on this hike to the highest peak of Velež Mountain (1900 m), which overlooks the city of Mostar. In addition to enjoying beautiful views of the nearby mountains from the peak, we’ll pay a visit to the remains of an underground military base.

This mountain peak was once an important communication base for the Yugoslav National Army. The base extends 50 meters deep below the mountain peak and was designed to survive an airstrike. Though it was damaged during Bosnia and Herzegovina’s civil war, it’s still possible to walk around inside and it’s a very interesting place to visit with a guide who can educate you about its history.

Book now for a hike that features both beautiful mountain scenery and a visit to a fascinating historical site.

Also check out the other great excursions offered in this region, like this day hike to Outlaw’s Gate and this 2-day hike to Maglić, the highest summit in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Hiking Guide

Welcome to your Herzegovina Hiking Adventure. My name is Miroslav Mihalj, born in Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. I am the current president of the Croatian Mountaineering Association “Prenj 1933 Mostar”, certified Mountain Guide and Rescuer and I offer hiking, snowshoeing and ski touring tours around this beautiful region.

As mountain hiker I am proud to have climbed some of the highest peaks in Europe and Balkans as well as local peaks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which I have climbed numerous times both in winter and summer.

I enjoy nature, that feeling of freedom and serenity the mountains offer. They are a place to find yourself and push your boundaries. I’m lucky to have been born in a place surrounded by beautiful and intact mountain ranges hiding the most exciting nature my country has to offer.

Very much excited to meet you and share with you this truly wonderful world!

What people are saying about Herzegovina

Sara

We really enjoyed our trip with our guide Mijo. He was extremely good in communicating at WhatsApp and very flexible. We ended our trip in a beautiful river with amazing surrounding view. I can highly recommend to do some hiking in the mountains around Mostar, really worth it.

Due to lack of snow the trip became a hike instead of a snowshoeing trip. Nevertheless it was an awesome experience in pristine mountain area. Miroslav was great. We didn’t meet another sole the full 22km and the lunch stop at the mountain hut was excellent.

Miroslav was a fantastic guide. We wanted to see Outlaw’s Gate up Čvrsnica but didn’t know where to begin, including how to get to the trailhead. Miroslav picked us up from Mostar and took us up to the top. Friendly, knowledgable and funny, we always felt at ease with his expertise on the route. Miroslav is the best guide in Herzegovina - cheers!
