Yakushima is one of the islands of Japan, located to the south of Kagoshima, which is at the southern tip of Kyushu island. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is an island with rich nature left in its wild state, and coexisting with small local settlements. It is also known for being the inspiration for the movie “Princess Mononoke” by Studio Ghibli.
Come and experience the wild island of Japan, full of moss green blessed with heavenly showers, an island of botanical treasure, and ancient forests..!
Why not paddle into the wilderness of Yakushima, in the emerald green and crystal clear Anbo river!? A half-day tour for you to enjoy Yakushima from a different perspective!
Technical / Fitness Level:
– Suitable for all levels
– Paddling for 3.5 hours.
Climate:
Yakushima is hot and humid in the summer with temperatures rising up to 27c or so in July / Aug but in high-altitude places like Mt Tachu, the temperature is lower. Nevertheless, there are breezes coming from both the ocean and the mountain, which makes it more comfortable.
We do get typhoons in Yakushima between May and October, often followed by cancellation of transportation. In this case, we can advise you on what you should do.

Mountain Guide
I am a JMGA certified hiking guide and a National Certified Tour Guide, living locally in Yakushima since 1998. I have always been passionate about the nature and the outdoors, and have also attended a park ranger school in Canada, where I rediscovered the beauty of the Japanese nature. Upon my return to Japan, I learnt about eco tourism in Yakushima, which is when I packed all my belongings on a van and moved there. Since then, I have been guiding in Yakushima and have attended thousands of visitors up to this day.
Many guests have told me that travelling with a guide is much more secure, informative and fun. The chance to communicate with the true locals is the real charm of the trip. I’ll do my best to make your time in Yakushima memorable and unforgettable!
I look forward to welcoming you and sharing the natural beauty of Yakushima with you, and the Japanese culture itself that is deeply related to its nature.
If I cannot guide the tour then my friend guide Akihiro (http://www.explore-share.com/mountain-guide/akihiro-wada/) will guide you.

We had *such* a good time with Junichi. The morning started with some light kayaking on the beautiful Anbo River with a stop for some tea before hiking in the cedar forests. Junichi speaks perfect English and is an excellent tour guide who taught us about the local plants and animals in Yakushima. Highly, highly recommend this, it was one of our favorite parts of our entire trip to Japan.
The trip with Junichi was a great and fully personalised experience. Yakushima is such an an amazing island! The guide takes care of absolutely everything - choosing the best spots, taking you there, telling you the story surrounding those locations, taking photos and even organising catering. Junichi is a very passionate and friendly guide - we enjoyed our time with him immensely. Thank You!
Junichi was an incredible guide who had answers for all of my questions about Yakushima! So friendly and patient. The hike to Yamato-Sugi was so special, and I'm so glad to do that one and have some time with the amazing tree and in the quiet of the forest.
Junichi is the perfect guide to the magical forests of Yakushima. He is fun to be with and very educational about the nature and the geology of the island. All in perfect English. Also the sightseeing around the island is fascinating with close encounters with monkeys and deer in the forests. He also provides great lunch-bentos and also a vegetarian alternative. Highly recommended!!!
Here, you can find several hiking trails of different lengths, that will lead you to some of the most impressive cedars in this primeval forest. This time, I propose to go on a short hiking trip: 1 or 2 hours of hiking in a completely safe environment. Even if it rains, you can take your umbrella and walk in the rain! After this short walk, we can go sightseeing for the rest of the tour day. However, you can stay longer in the forest if you want to, exploring deeper areas in a wilder hiking trail. The total length of the tour will be between 3 and 6 hours, depending on your wishes.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
