FAQs

How long are we going to climb for? What time will we start?

The climbing time is about 3 hours. The appointment is typically scheduled in the morning, starting at 9 a.m. and lasting until around 12 p.m. If you wish to climb for a full day, it's also possible, of course. You'll find more information about my full-day climbing tours in Les Calanques on this page here: https://www.explore-share.com/trip/multi-pitch-rock-climbing-calanques-southern-france/

Will I be required to bring my own technical climbing equipment?

You should bring walking shoes or sneakers and a backpack with water and snacks.

I will supply the helmet, rope, and quick draw.

If you don't have climbing shoes, I can lend you a pair.

Where is the meeting point? How can I get there?

The meeting point is located on the Route des CrĂŞtes, situated between Cassis and La Ciotat. You can verify the exact location by visiting this page: https://maps.app.goo.gl/8aMUFRGofhLVxJbEA

If you're using public transportation, I can also arrange to pick you up at La Ciotat train station.

Is deep water soloing possible in Les Calanques?

Deep water soloing is possible in Les Calanques, including the area around La Ciotat. There are several captivating climbing locations available. However, it's essential to be aware that this activity is highly dependent on weather conditions. If the sea is rough or the weather is unfavorable, it can pose safety risks.

What is the difficulty level and the grading for the climbing routes on this tour? Are there routes for beginners/intermediate/advanced climbers?

The climbing routes can be tailored to your skill level. For example, if you are comfortable climbing at levels like 5.9-5.10 or 5.11-5.12 indoors, we can choose appropriate routes for you. There are options for different levels, and routes can be adjusted based on your experience.

What kind of previous experience and training do I need? Is it okay if I never climbed outdoors before?

You don't need previous outdoor climbing experience to join this trip. If you have only climbed indoors, that's fine. We can set up top rope anchors, so lead climbing is not necessary unless you want to try it. Routes will be chosen to match your skill level.

Rock Climbing Instructor

My name is Guillaume. I am a certified Rock Climbing Instructor in the Calanques, offering guided tours from Marseille to Cassis and everywhere in Provence.

I have been passionate about climbing since I was I child. I was initiated very early into climbing thanks to the mountain club of my hometown, Villemur sur Tarn, a small village in the south west of France. I had my first classes on the rock of Saint Antonin Noble Val, in the gorges of Aveyron.

During a trip with friends, I discovered Marseille and especially its national park. The beauty of the landscapes, the sun, the sea, and the endless number of climbing routes totally seduced me! After a year already planned in Quebec, I decided to validate my university degree in computer science. I applied to the last year of Computer Master at the Faculty of Luminy and moved to Marseille.

My passion for climbing became my profession a few years later, following a professional reconversion. More than 10 years later, I still live close to this beautiful area that is the Calanques and climbing in all its forms remains forever a passion.
