Description

Majestic granite outcrops soar above the restful village of Guatapé, just on the outskirts of Medellín.

El Peñol is packed with over 100 classic sports climbing routes ranging from a few meters to a maximum of 200 meters.

Full of magic and wonder, the enchanting area offers breathtaking scenery and a full disversity of climbs for all levels of ability.

El Peñol is one of Colombia’s biggest granite outcrops that looks down upon the stunning lakeside village of Guatapé.

Regular tourists typically climb the 750-step staircase all the way to the top of El Peñol. For the more adventurous, higher thrills lie in rock climbing to the summit.

The ancient indigenous Tahamí people of the region once worshiped the towering El Peñol.

It was declared a national monument of Colombia all the way back in the 1940s.

The first recorded climb came in 1954 by the three climbers, Luis Villegas, Pedro Nel Ramirez and Ramón Díaz. Summiting the rock took a whole 5 days, which contrasts sharply with the 10-20 minute walk up the staircase.

Get in touch now to reserve your place in the majestic Colombian wilderness on a half-day rock climbing trip on El Peñol, close to Medellín.

Rock Guide

I´m a local Climber settled next to the big rock "El Peñol" that loves setting new routes to share with the community around the World. Adherence and slap technique has developed my skills and it is what I try to share and communicate as a guide. I have been living and guiding in this region for about 7 years but my experience as a climber comes from adolescence, more than 15 years. I lead some environmental processes that pretend better management of this rock and the recognition of its history. I'm the founder of Corporación de Escalada de Antioquia, a non-profit entity in charge of the conservation and management of the Peñol climbing park.

What people are saying about this trip

Henry

Me and my partner had an awesome time climbing with Sergio. As climbers of little outdoor experience, we learned a lot from Sergio’s advice and this, combined with the fact that it is far more exciting to climb on this gargantuan rock, than to simply walk up it, made this activity an unforgettable experience. All in all, a great day out and I would highly recommend to both accomplished climbers as well as those with little or no experience.
