Description

Would you like to take part of an unforgettable hiking experience in Madeira? Then visit the best spots of the island on these full day walks from Funchal, Caniço and Machico. We lead a different one each day of the week!

One of the most popular and beautiful hikes in Madeira is the path that leads across the 25 Fontes, a group of waterfalls in Rabaçal. We’ll start in Paul da Serra at 1,300 meters of altitude and enjoy an 11-kilometer walk. During the program, we’ll explore the gorgeous Laurissilva Forest and get to see part of its wide vegetation and lovely birds.

Another amazing and very popular area on the island is the Levada do Caldeirão Verde, that will take us across the Queimadas Forest Park. On this 13-kilometer hike, we’ll cross narrow tunnels and contemplate spectacular views of the island’s interior.

Furthermore, an exciting possibility could be to reach the summit of Pico Ruivo (1,862 meters), the tallest peak in Madeira. We can also follow a levada that will lead us across the island’s lakes and the old paths still used by farmers. Other fantastic possibilities for these full day hikes could be Vereda do Fanal, Ribeiro Frio and Hidden Corners.

Below, you will find the areas we explore depending on the day of the week:

  • 25 Fontes – Tuesday and Thursday

  • Lakes – Thursday and Sunday

  • Queimadas Forest Park – Friday

  • Vereda do Fanal – Friday

  • Ribeiro Frio – Wednesday

  • Hidden Corners – Saturday

  • Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo – Wednesday and Saturday

As for the difficulty, keep in mind that the level of the hikes is moderate and that the length goes from 10-13 kilometers depending on the walk. Therefore, it’s important to be in good physical shape.

What people are saying about this trip

Claire

We did the 3-peak hike to Pico Ruivo. Filipe was a wonderful guide. Friendly, knowledgeable and with deep passion and respect for the island and its wildlife, which was very touching. We learnt quite a bit about the fauna and flora and we got to feel really connected to the nature around us. The hike was challenging at times, lots of steep steps, although the majority of the path is paved, so very easy to navigate. Filipe was considerate of people's different abilities and there was an option to go on an easier walk if preferred. We were rewarded with such dramatic views. We were quite lucky with the weather too! We really enjoyed our day and it was a lovely introduction to the fauna and flora of the island. Thanks Filipe!
