About 700,000 years ago, a large volcanic eruption caused lava to spew into a molten river. A shell formed as the lava cooled and hardened from the outside in, resulting in a hollow tube known today as the Lava River Cave. Join me on a half-day trip to explore this fascinating site.
Since this cave wasn’t formed by water, don’t expect to see the typical stalactites and stalagmites. Instead, look for places where molten rock hardened in motion, leaving solidified bubbles and ripples.
This is a perfect family-friendly excursion that takes place just a few miles from Flagstaff and only requires a couple miles of hiking.
Come experience this unique geological wonder close-up. It’s sure to make an impression on you!
