The largest island in the world and with habitation going back 4,500 years, Greenland is a truly fascinating place to discover. The majority of the landmass is covered by the only other permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica, creating a picturesque world of ice.
East Greenland (known as Tunu by the Inuit) is a wild and beautiful coastline that is a must see for avid explorers. With ginormous glaciers, rugged mountains, iceberg filled fjords and ancient cultures, Tunu is set to inspire.
Together we will explore some of the most wild locations possible, rarely seen by human eyes. Our movements will be efficient with a light day pack, whilst a boat will travel in tandem transporting our camp and heavier possessions.
After meeting in Reykjavik, Iceland we will fly to Kulusuk island where we will spend the night. Kulusuk is a small community of 250 Inuits subsisting with hunting, after exploring the village we will begin our trek.
On route we will pass over fjords, explore rich tundra, observe the wild arctic fauna and spend nights overlooking spectacular glaciers calving into the sea.
When travelling by boat we will weave between icebergs and watch whales feeding. Every night we will set up camp in a special location and if it’s the end of August you may even see the first signs of Aurora Borealis.
The Greenland summer is short but intense and provides myriad plants and flowers to see including Arctic Poppies, Arctic Willow, Speedwells, Alpine Gentians and Saxifrage.
East Greenland’s coastal waters are rich with marine life including Minke, Fin, Humpback, Narwhal, Orca, Seals and Walruses. Meanwhile on land, Arctic Foxes will likely visit the camp and Polar bears do periodically pass through – we always take the necessary safety measures.
Myself and my team are the most experienced and qualified in Greenland. This is our home and we utilise our local knowledge to create the most exciting trips, whilst also ensuring your safety.
The trip does not include major ascents (highest climb 400m) but we will be traversing rocky shorelines, boulder-filled hillsides and untracked land. Therefore confidence on uneven and exposed terrain is required. We advise spending time hiking before the trip to prepare.
If this journey into the stunning arctic wilderness of the north excites you then don’t hesitate to sign up now and join me on the adventure of a lifetime!
If you fancy a longer time to explore and immerse yourself in this incredible landscape then consider joining me on this extended 10-day excursion in East Greenland for even greater intimacy with arctic nature.

Reykjavik is a great place to spend some days before or after your trip, with lots to do in the surrounding area and a big range of cafes, restaurants and bars to explore.
There is a small but significant risk of meeting polar bears in East Greenland. We don’t leave it to chance: with the right equipment, experience and systems, we carefully manage this risk.
