The Emilio Frey hut is located at the foot of the Frey Needle, surrounded by incredible towers and rocky spires on the banks of the Toncek Lagoon. Undoubtedly, it is one of the most picturesque refuges in Patagonia.
This full day trek I offer consists in a hiking adventure departing from the base of Cerro Catedral, Bariloche. After ascending with the chair lift up to the ridge of this mountain we’ll start the hike. We’ll border the west side of the massif. At this point we’ll be able to admire the famous Mount Tronador and all the Rucaco Valley.
After that, we must descend to the Schmoll Lagoon by a rocky terrain. Finally, we will reach the Toncek Lagoon, where the Frey Hut is. The total hike from the ski lift station to the refuge will take 4 hours.
After a deserved lunch and rest in the hut, we’ll return by the normal route to Villa Catedral. The way down is a little shorter and it will take about 3 hours.
If you want to join me on this trip please remember to bring the proper equipment. Trekking shoes, warm jacket and clothing, sunglasses, hat, gloves, sunscreen and water.
Did you find this one day trek tempting? So contact me now! Fill out the form and I will be in touch with you soon. Let’s discover this Patagonian region together!

We had a different guide Mercedes at the last minute as Camilla’s daughter was sick. She was very nice and gave us lots of information. We did an up and back walk to Frey Hut and did not go up the cable car and along the ridge which was the circular planned route. It was raining in the morning which was the reason. The weather cleared as expected. It was a shame that this could not have done the walk the other way round. We are grateful Camilla organised another guide for us so that we were able to hike.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
