The Tablelands are a portion of exposed mantle that was brought to the surface through plate tectonics. Located in the Gros Morne National Park in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, it is one of the most intriguing regions of eastern Canada along the Atlantic Ocean.
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is a popular destination for many Canadians and international travelers. There are ample outdoor activities and a rare topography to explore, making a day trek here unusual for its ability to cater to the geographic history of its land formation.
The flora and fauna are particular to this region because of the barren landscape of the Tablelands. Stubborn vegetation like juniper and sandwort are examples of the few plants capable of growing in the harsh conditions. The soil lacks the necessary nutrients for the sustainable growth of more delicate plants, and, when coupled with high altitudes and minimal shelter, creates an extremely difficult area for thriving flora.
Your program is designed to take you to all the best vantage points in the Tablelands. Over a full day of hiking, you will take part in phenomenal panoramas of Bonne Bay, Trout River Gulch, and the Gros Morne National Park in all its splendor. Trekking through the orange-tinted rocks of the Tablelands is an unforgettable moment in any hiker’s itinerary.
We will start early, as this route will take you to the most notable points in the area and will not double-back. It is a great way to gain practical navigational experience, especially along the plateau of the Tablelands. We will begin with a route along the Winter House Brook Canyon as we make our way along the stream and into the steep incline at the back of the canyon.
We will hike up and over a small valley, and then along the incomparable views that make this journey so magnificent. You will look out over the steep cliffs to the evocative land below. This portion of the hike is along an unmarked path and adds a navigational element for a true trekking experience. Once you reach the Bowl, you will cross the stream at the bottom and continue on your way.
This route is an excellent way to cover every charming aspect of the Tablelands, from views to challenges to overall appreciation of its nature. There is no better way to enjoy this fascinating landmark than by touring as much as possible. Your program is intended to give you the best chance to know this gem of eastern Canada.
The route is a 12-kilometer loop that takes roughly six to eight hours to complete and requires navigational aptitude and natural awareness. Hiking experience is an asset, and you should be in good shape for a full day of hiking.
The area is an absolute must for trekkers with an eye for geology. We are more than happy to provide a safe, satisfying, and unbelievably fun trip into the heart of one of the world’s most unique and interesting land formations.
Book this day hike NOW and learn what makes the Tablelands of Gros Morne National Park one of the prized possessions of the Canadian wilderness!
We can also try a shorter hike and enjoy the Winter House Brook Canyon Route without the loop extension! Or we can try a faster climb on the Top of the Bowl Route!
