The Siagne, a 44km river that splits the Var and Alpes-Maritimes departments for a considerable amount of its length, has cultivated life throughout the region and into the Mediterranean Sea. Over the course of time, it has provided the communities surrounding its banks with pristine water for their development, and has even aided the rapid growth of more recent tourist cities in the last couple of centuries.
The river has carved caves and caverns through the ancient rock formations, enduring millions of years of digging its route through calcareous rock and limestone deposits. These Mesozoic stories are a true delight on a tranquil afternoon hike, enriching the natural experience of trekking through the valley.
Your journey will begin just outside of St. Cezaire, and once on the trail you will be able to overlook the Grande Siagne. Composed of three parts sourced in Pare, Mons, and St. Vallier-Le Garbo, it is a stunning vantage point to an impressive valley view.
We will continue along the Canal de la Siagne – one of many canals and aqueducts built by the Romans to supply water to Frejus – and descend to Ponadieu. The name describes the natural rock arch created by the river from a history of erosion, meaning ¨Bridge of God.¨
This is a perfect spot to enjoy a picnic and take pictures of the natural beauty of this outstanding location. Once we´ve been satisfied from such a pleasing afternoon, we will head back for our return home.
This hike is for anyone who has a deep appreciation for nature and geoformations. There is a bit of hiking, so a moderate fitness will enhance your ability to enjoy the experience.
Book now and enjoy a timeless day hike through the Siagne Valley in France, one that is as historic as it is beautiful.
I can also set you up on a weekend hike and bivouac at La Colle-Saint-Michel! Or we can check out Malmort Castle on a day hike to the Roya Valley!

I booked a tour with Fabrice on late May, definitely the highlight of my holiday, we went on a hike around Casterino It was a relaxed hike with great sights of mountain forests and lakes, I got to see some of the local fauna and flora of the park, ibex, marmots, chamois, although not as much as they would be in the area, possibly because of the wolfs (we saw some footprints). Overall it is a great way to see the surroundings. I would definitely recommend Fabrice as a guide for your next hike!
