Andes

3 Days

Jan - Mar, Nov, Dec

Description

Mount Tronador is an iconic peak of the Andes in the region of Bariloche.

This 3-day mountaineering program will take us to the Argentine Peak of Mount Tronador.

Usually on the first day we start from “Pampa Linda”, and from there we do a 4/5 hs trek up to Meiling hut. On the next day after an early wake up we start to climb Tronador over the different glaciers: Argentine peak is 3250 m high. The round trip takes around 10/12 hs. Rope and glacier skills are necessary during all day. The following day we go back down on the same trail from Meiling hut to Pampa Linda.

Detailed itinerary

DAY 1:

After a 2-hour drive from Bariloche, we arrive to Pampa Linda. Here we do the registration at the ranger station office. The trekking to the Meiling huts begins. This hut is located 2000 meters above sea level. During the trekking we walk through Coihues and Lengas forest, the endemic trees of this area. Then we continue to the “almohadilla” zone that leads us to a rocky terrain surrounded by the Frias and Castaño Overa glaciers. In the afternoon, we do an equipment check and everything necessary for summit day. The hut offers all the comfort needed to relax after the long trekking as well as an extensive menu of meals and drinks.

DURATION: 4/5 hours.
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM.
VERTICAL DROP: 1200 meters

DAY 2:

On this day we leave the hut very early in the morning before sunrise, this way we enjoy all the day, and have enough time to get to the peak. We spend most of the day walking on the glacier, and for this activity we will use ropes, ice axe and crampons. With a minimum of stops and walking in a constant rhythm, we will be reaching the altitude needed to get to the “col”, place where we do the last step to the summit. During the last meters to the top, we continue doing some climbing, until we reach the Argentinean peak 3200 m above the sea level. Finally a descend and return to the hut.

DURATION: 8/10 hs
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: MEDIUM / HIGH
VERTICAL DROP: 1200 m

DAY 3:

This is our backup day, in case of bad weather. If everything goes well, we will be having breakfast and taking some pictures of the beautiful surroundings of Meiling hut. Then we return to Pampa Linda, where we take the shuttle that takes us back to Bariloche.

DURATION: 3 hs
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: LOW

Mountain Guide

I was born in a very remote area of northern Argentina which gave me a special appreciation for the outdoors. When I was 16 my family moved south, closer to the mountains, and I started to climb in the Andes. I've been mountaineering – trekking and climbing – ever since.
I've traveled and climbed throughout Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, the USA, Canada and Europe. I spent two summer seasons working in Aosta, Italy where I completed numerous ascents and climbing on the area.
At some point in my younger years, my career path steered me to the telecommunications industry, scaling towers and fixing cellular systems. But the mountains were never far away and I eventually returned to my roots and become a mountain guide since 2001.
In the winter I focus on being a ski guide around the mountain range and also the volcanoes, this is how I spend part of my time on the winter seasons as well as teaching backcountry ski and avalanche awareness courses.
