Are you ready for an exciting adventure at great heights? I invite all experienced hikers to join me on this 15-day expedition in the beautiful Cordillera Blanca of Peru.
Climbing expeditions in the Cordillera Blanca mountains of Peru have been extremely popular for climbers from around the world since the 1950’s, and for good reason! This tightly packed range of mountains has a vast variety of terrain.
We will climb two intermediate level peaks on this tour. Pisco is one peak which stands at over 5,700 meters. Chopicalqui is another which is over 6,300 meters tall. Taking on these peaks is the perfect next step for anyone who has already climbed glaciated peaks such as those in the Himalayas and wants to take themselves to the next level.
I have prepared a specialized itinerary which will allow us plenty of time for acclimation to the high elevations we will be climbing. It is important that you feel comfortable camping in a cold environment on an active glacier. We will each have to carry our backpacks on us so make sure you are prepared to trek with a large pack!
We will first climb Pisco, thus working ourselves up to the higher peak of Chopicalqui. Our goal in Pisco will be to build our hiking skills and to acclimatize to the climate and elevation.
Pisco and Chopicalqui are two of the most beautiful peaks in Peru. At these incredible heights, we will gaze upon an unbelievable landscape. Join me on this spectacular 15-day trek and leave with memories and a feeling of accomplishment that will last a lifetime!
Our Peru Llama Trek Tour leader will find you in the reception of the Lima International Airport. We will head to a hotel in Miraflores.
We will drive to Huaraz for 8 hours. If we are a big group we will travel by private van. If we are less than 10 people, we will take a touristic bus. We will arrive at a hotel in Huaraz where we will have dinner and overnight stay.
Peru Llam Trek will organize your Charity Acclimatizing hike to Cordillera Negra. Here, we can visit the local community of families in need who will benefit from this charity. 5% of all payments for this expedition will go to families from this community.
After breakfast in Hotel Huaraz, we will leave the north side. We will pass diverse villages and towns. We can make stops along the way to visit and take pictures. In the early afternoon we will arrive at Llanganuco Lakes and set up camp overnight in Cebollapampa.
We will leave from Cebollapampa to a moderate hike up to Pisco Bae Camp. It should be 5 hours of steady walking. We will arrive in the early afternoon for lunch and relaxation. We will overnight at the Base Camp on Pisco.
We will climb a challenging rock glacier then climb steeply into camp in a small sandy basin just below the end of the Moreiene glacier. We will arrive early to Morreine camp for lunch, dinner and overnight.
We will review all technical climbing skills to prepare ourselves for Mount Chopicalqui. We will practice our knots and cords, review glacier travel and crevasse rescue skills.
We will begin this day very early, around 2 AM. We can have hot energetic drinks and breakfast then begin the climb to the summit of Pisco. We will begin on the glacier then climb moderate slopes to a saddle on the ridge between Pisco and the Huandoys. As the sun rises, we will climb steeper exposed slopes, crossing frequent crevasses to the final summit bulge. The final slope is very steep so we will need excellent crampon and vertical axe techinique. After our climb, we pack up high camp and return to base camp.
Today we can all sleep until late morning and rest in the base camp. We can walk around and have some beer and just relax. We will enjoy some good food and overnight in the base camp.
We will pack up after brekafast and head to the Llanganuco Valley. We will walk down to Cebollapampa and hike up to the Choicalqui Base Camp, with an optional excursion to Lagun 69.
We will leave base camp and ascend to Moreine Camp on Choicalqui. Here we will have dinner and overnight.
Mountain breakfast in Moreine camp and then move onto the glacier and ascend to high camp. High camp sits on the flat glacier bench at 18,000 feet. Highcamp dinner and overnight at glacier.
We will have an energizing breakfast around 1 AM then attempt Chopicalquis summit. This is a summit to be incredibly proud of. In most years, only a few strong teams from around the world were successful in this summit. After the summit, we descend to Moreine camp.
We will descend to base camp. Our van will pick us up early in the afternoon and bring us to Huaraz, where we will celebrate with hot showers, good food and dancing at the local disco.
We will have a free day at Huaraz for shopping and preparing to head bad to Lima. The bus of van will go back to Lima around 10 PM or later, arriving in Lima around 6 AM. We can transfer you to the airport or hotel.

We had such an amazing time on this Trek! From the beginning to the end we had wonderful service through “Wild Huayhuash - Tomas Operator”. It is an amazing, beautiful, take your breath away hike. The guides are knowledgeable, kind, and extremely helpful. We had guide/cook Rosmel, guide Angel, operators Edgar and Tomas. Rosmel made us food every day(breakfast, lunch, snacks (popcorn), and dinner), woke us up to a fresh cup of tea every morning in our tent, and guides us through the first few days of our hike. He was like Superman carrying our lunch on his back every day of the trek (think heavy food in pots, with juice). Angel was the guide the rest of the way through the trek and was also very kind and professional. He was funny, paced us well through the hard sections, and let us have breaks whenever we needed. Both Rosmel & Angel were always working to get us to the best viewpoints, and best camping spots first, before the other groups. They also both helped when I had an asthma attack during the trek. From the operator side, Tomas and Edgar were amazing. Going through all the information we would need, allowing us to leave extra things in their office, allowing us to rest and shower in one of their rooms at no extra charge when we got back from the trek, and Edgar helped us find a map of Huayhuash so we could document our journey when we got back (finding a map of Huayhuash in Huaraz was not easy). This was a well put together group, and always seemed to be one step ahead of the other Huayhuash trekking groups. I highly recommend!
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
