The dramatic red sandstone rock formations that feature in the Roxborough State Park provide the spectacular backdrop for hiking in Colorado.
Carpenter Peak is one of the jewels of the park which offers stunning panoramic views once reaching the peak.
The hike to the summit is a strenuous 3.1-mile journey that overlooks the red rock formations of the nearby Fountain Valley. Looking west you’ll discover snow-covered mountain peaks, with the long plains to the east.
The Roxborough State Park is a national natural landmark that nurtures a complex of ecological systems. Consisting of pine forests and prairie land with vast swathes of woodlands, the park hosts a bundle of wildlife.
There are over 145 bird species soaring the skies of the park, 50 butterfly species and 11 amphibian and reptile species. Among the larger animals, the black bear, fox, mountain lion and coyote are all at home in the park.
In the east of the park where there are green hills you’ll witness the grazing of antelopes and deer.
Our trail cuts through a corridor of oak scrubs which form a natural shelter from the sun, before opening up into large meadows among the rocky red rocks.
Then we head to the steepest and most demanding section of the trail when we cross a dirt road before zigzagging the hillside and reaching the final points to reach Carpenter Peak.
