Located in the province of Huesca, in the autonomous community of Aragon, Spain, Sierra de Guara is a breathtaking mountain massif with one of the world’s most stunning canyons that attracts people from all over the world. Mascun, which in Arabic means “space inhabited by spirits”, is therefore truly inhabited by spirits: free spirits, adventurers and nature lovers like you who join us every year to discover this unique and breathtaking landscape.
The Mascun canyon only has water in the spring, after heavy rainfalls, so excursions usually take place between the months of April and June. The hike, although accessible for most people, is quite challenging. Therefore, it requires you to be in good shape and, ideally, to have some previous experience.
We begin early in the morning with a walk down the Otín path that leads into the canyon and takes a little over two hours. It is a lovely scenic trek that we want to do early in order to avoid the heat and to take advantage of the time. Then, once inside the canyon, the real journey begins through narrow gorges and amazing rock formations on the way to Odellar.
There are various vertical drops for abseil on the way, however some are slippery and not all are safe. Descent into the Oscuros de Otín is the highlight of the excursion, although only possible when there is water, so timing your trip is key.
All in all, this is an exhilarating day trip into the heart of Mascún where you can enjoy both the challenge and reward of exploring a beautiful canyon that will uplift your spirit. Start planning your trip now and join me on the next advanced canyoning day trip to Mascún!
