Today I am proposing a 7-day backpacking trip in the Aysen Region. It is an ideal expedition for those who appreciate the loneliness of nature and the wildlife.
Aysen is one of the 15 regions in which Chile is organized. It is located just in the Chilean Patagonia, in the South of the country. The Aysen Region has the best landscapes, glaciers and many natural points of interest. However, it has never been a touristic place. And that’s what makes Aysen so attractive and magic for trekking activities.
As for the itinerary, our starting point will be in Coyhaique, the capital of Aysen. Here we will check the equipment and begin our journey by truck, across the “Carretera Austral”. This drive will take us most of the day since we must reach the southernmost side of the region.
During the way you will admire amazing sceneries. Among them, the Lago General Carreras, Puerto Tranquilo and the Baker River. It is a river with an unbelievable waterfall: “El Salto del Baker”. Once we get to our trail head, at Rio Maiten, we will set up camp and spend the night there.
Our next goal will be to lead up to the Neff Valley and its fantastic glacier. On the way up there, we may meet the “pobladores”. They are original inhabitants that will welcome us with their characteristic kindness, inviting us to share a typical meal. After two hiking days, we will finally leave the main trail and start a climb up to one of the Aysen summits.
The following day will be an intense one because we must cross a snowy and rocky ground until we get to the massive glacier of Neff. Its amazing viewpoint includes the “San Valentin” peak, the highest summit of the Chilean Patagonia.
We will then start to head down among steep and ice slopes. However, in the last days of this trip the field turns into an easier one. It will make us enjoy more the landscapes and the native flora and fauna. Once again in our ending point the truck will take us to Coyhaique. There, we will celebrate our goals with a fantastic dinner and a deserved hot shower!
Chilean Patagonia is waiting for you. All you have to do is getting in touch with me and, of course, having your backpack ready. I have no doubt it will be an unforgettable adventure throughout the Aysen Region.

Mountain Leader
AAGM mountain guide from Argentina.
I was raised in Buenos Aires where I used to go sailing and fishing with my family during weekend and holidays. As a teenager I began traveling to Patagonia with friends to fish, hike and camp. Years later I became a rock climber and mountaineer since I wanted to asses more summits and amazing views.
At the age of 23 and after gathering a good amount of fun ascents and traverses along Patagonia, I decided to fully commit to a life in the outdoors. As a result I started my carrier at N.O.L.S. – National Outdoors Leadership School in the U.S.A. and Chile. I lead rock climbing and mountaineering trips in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Alaska and in Aysen (Chilean Patagonia) for nine years.
In 2009 finally settled permanently in Bariloche and focused my guiding work on the Lake District Region. Here I discovered new styles of guiding and service which were good to experience and helped me grow in this profession. Now I am able to mix my background on outdoor education with the guiding world and create unique experiences for active travelers.
I take advantage of every season of the year, going mountain biking and sea-kayaking in the summer, ice-skating on alpine lakes during the Fall, back-country skiing during the Winter, rock climbing and mountaineering as soon as the Spring makes it way through the snow.

Juan was a great guide. We went in mid November and there’s no way we could have done the Frey to Jacob traverse without him. He’s very relaxed but you feel very safe and unhurried, good fun to be around. He looked after us really well and even let us take a shower at his place before we headed off to the airport.
