Description

A few hours away from San Pedro de Atacama we find the perfect volcanic cone of Licancabur. Located right between Chile and Bolivia, it rises almost 6000 meters high. It can be climbed from either of the two countries. Since the Bolivian side is more accessible and very beautiful, we will take this route.

Licancabur has a rich Incan history. Indeed, major Incan ruins are at its base and summit!

To join the expedition, you need to have basic trekking experience and be healthy and fit. In addition, be sure to comply with the legal requirements to enter Bolivia (passport and migration stamps).

Please note that acclimatization is important! We recommend sleeping at least 3 nights in San Pedro de Atacama before the trip. And it’s ideal to climb a lower mountain before Licancabur.

I propose to you the following 2-day program.

Day 1: Laguna Blanca (4400 m)
We leave at 7AM from San Pedro de Atacama. We cross the Bolivian border and drive until Laguna Blanca. During the day we will go on very light walks. Overnight in a mountain hut.

Day 2: Summit day (5917 m)
Today starts very early, at 4AM. Breakfast followed by a drive to the base of the mountain, where we start the walk. The ascent to the summit will be 7-9 hours long because of the high altitude. Return to San Pedro de Atacama around 6PM.

Does the ascent to this mythical volcano sound tempting? Then please contact me for more information! It will be my pleasure taking you there.

Another option could be this ascent to the Lascar Volcano in Chile. Check it out!

About lead guide, Christian Fernandez:

I’m originally from Argentina, but live in Chile since 1998. Now I’m settled in the north of Chile, in San Pedro de Atacama, beautiful town in the heart of the Andean section of the dry Atacama dessert.

From there I organize many expeditions to beautiful peaks on a weekly basis. I’ve done more than 300 high altitude ascents, and more than 25 peaks over 6000 metres.

I speak English, Spanish and Portuguese.
