This Alerce Glacier traverse will take you from Otto Meiling to Rocca refuge, in Cerro Tronador, in the company of a certified mountain guide.

Andes

+1 Day

Jan - Apr, Oct - Dec

Description

The Alerce Glacier traverse is an excursion suitable for hikers with a background on rocky terrain since, apart from an easy stretch on glacier, most of its itinerary is downhill on medium loose scree.

Quite convenient for those who wish to visit both Meiling Refuge and the Pampa Linda – Paso de las Nubes – Lake Frias traverse, but do not want to spend one day walking back down from Meiling to retake the Paso de las Nubes trail.

The traverse lasts 4 to 5 hours. It starts at the Meiling Refuge (6135 ft). Beforehand we pick up the necessary gear for crossing the glacier and prepare the backpacks. The hike goes across Glacier Alerce with its crevasses and beautiful colours. I will explain, amongst other issues, about the glaciers formation and evolution, the mountain volcanic origins and the proper use of the gear. The excursion continues descending along ridges and scree on the north side of Mt. Tronador with astonishing views over the Frias and Alerce valleys until Paso de las Nubes (4590 ft).

Here the Agostino Rocca Refuge stands and the guided part ends. That’s halfway on the famous Paso de las Nubes trail. Once at the Rocca Refuge, I return to Meiling Refuge carrying the technical gear. The rest of the group takes the final part of the trail. Either to Lake Frias to take a boat to Bariloche or Chile, or back to Pampa Linda.

This includes during day 1 the transfer from Bariloche to Pampa Linda and the ascent to the refuge. On day 2 the traverse. On day 3 the descent from the refuge to Pampa Linda, and the transfer back from there to Bariloche.

Let me know if you are interested in doing this Alerce Glacier program in one of the most iconic mountains of Bariloche region!

More info

Provided technical gear: harness, walking pole, rope, anchors and safety items. Depending on the terrain conditions crampons and/or special shoes may be also provided. As far as possible, I will have time flexibility in case of bad weather. The price varies with the size of the group and is subject to change without prior notice.

  • I'm working with the people of the refuge Meiling and I do often the cross between Rocca and Meiling. Also I do often the Argentinean Peak. that are packaged tours with technical gear included, stored in Meiling refuge.
  • In high season if I'm already based in the Tronador, I would only be guiding on glaciar and to the peak, the trekking part would be done on your own. If you need a guide for the full trip (before glacier), I can organize it with a trekking guide. However, it is very a really simple trekking way very well marked. If you have some experience, there should not be any problem.
  • We can try to meet before the expedition in your hotel.

Meeting point

We will meeting either in Bariloche or the Otto Meiling refuge, depending on the option you choose.

What people are saying about Argentina

Bassel

Pablo was excellent as always and put us in touch with Julian Lopez who organised 4 days of splitboarding in North Patagonia. His knowledge as a guide and as an Argentine were thoroughly appreciated. Highly recommended.

Becky

I spent three days on the glaciers above Chamonix with Jeremias at the beginning of July 2015, preparing for a three week tour with him to Patagonia. I cannot recommend Jeremias' guiding highly enough. He is highly expert in everything concerning the mountains and was truly excellent company throughout. I cannot wait to go again!
