Description

Achieve every mountaineer's dream by climbing Mont Blanc via the Goûter or 4000s route.

Come with us on a challenging ascent to Mont Blanc, the towering peak of the Alps, standing at an incredible 4,810 meters (15,780 feet). This remarkable height makes it the highest summit in the European Union and one of the most elevated peaks in Europe, surpassed only by a handful of mountains in Russia and Georgia.

Experience our meticulously designed five-day Objective Ascent to Mont Blanc program. Guided by a certified expert, we'll facilitate the necessary acclimatization process while honing the essential techniques required for a successful Mont Blanc summit.

Mirror the technical challenges of Mont Blanc in a condensed format. These days provide an opportunity to acclimatize to high-altitude conditions and progressively enhance our skills.

Our preferred acclimatization climbs include the Arête des Cosmiques and the Aiguille du Tour,. These are all classic alpine climbs that offer climbers the opportunity to gain experience and acclimatize to high altitudes before attempting to summit Mont Blanc.

Once we're ready, we'll finally embark on our challenging ascent to the summit of Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. We'll climb through glacial terrain, passing key landmarks like the Dôme de Goûter, a magnificent dome-shaped peak, and Les Bosses, a pair of twin peaks that offer stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

After hours of climbing, we'll finally reach the summit of Mont Blanc and we'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the Alps, stretching out in all directions.

While this ascent does not require advanced technical skills (there is no actual rock climbing involved), maintaining a high level of physical fitness is essential due to the significant elevation gain. Effective acclimatization in the days leading up to the summit is also paramount.

Itinerary

Day 1: Acclimatization day

On the first day, we will begin our acclimatization process with a carefully planned ascent. The specific activity will depend on the current mountain conditions and your level of experience. Some of our favorite acclimatization climbs include the Arête des Cosmiques or Aiguille du Tour. We will start our adventure with a cable car ride to the Aiguille du Midi, where we will spend the night in a high-altitude mountain hut.

Day 2: Second acclimatization day

After breakfast at our mountain refuge, we will embark on our daily climbing activity, which will occupy most of the day. We will then descend via cable car and return to Chamonix. Please make your own accommodation reservations for the second night in Chamonix.

Day 3: Journey to Tête Rousse refuge

On the third day, our rendezvous point is either Chamonix or the Bellevue cable car parking in Les Houches. The morning is yours to pack your backpacks and do any last-minute shopping. Following a thorough gear inspection, we'll board the cable car to Bellevue (1,794m), where we'll transfer to the Mont Blanc rack railway bound for Nid d'Aigle (2,362m) – the starting point of our expedition.

Leaving Nid d'Aigle behind, we'll embark on a 2 to 3-hour ascent with an elevation gain of 800 meters, leading us to the Tête Rousse refuge situated at 3,165 meters. This refuge rests adjacent to the glacier bearing the same name. The presence of snow along this route can vary depending on the season, with it either beginning at the train's terminus or remaining snow-free until we reach the refuge.

Day 4: Ascend Mont Blanc

After a brief night's rest, we set off on our demanding ascent of Mont Blanc at 4am. Fully equipped with essential gear, we navigate the glacial landscape, passing key landmarks such as the Dôme de Goûter and Les Bosses peaks, until we reach the towering summit of Mont Blanc at 4,810 meters. We retrace our steps on the descent, returning to the Goûter refuge at 3,815 meters for the night.

Day 5: Final Mont Blanc descent

On our final day, we'll rise early to begin our descent. It's important to descend quickly, reaching the "bowling alley" as soon as possible to minimize risks. Once we're past this challenging section, the level of danger decreases significantly. We'll pass close to the Tête Rousse refuge, where we can take a break or continue on to the Nid d'Aigle train station (2,362m).

FAQs

What experience and how fit do I need to be to climb this mountain? Is this program suitable for children or older people?

While climbing Mont Blanc does not involve technical climbing, as it's primarily an alpine ascent, participants are required to possess prior hiking experience. This may include previous hikes in the Pyrenees, the Scottish Munros, or equivalent endeavors. Although not mandatory, some familiarity with winter climbing is advisable. It is desirable to have some experience walking with the use of crampons and axe.

What is the best time of the year to climb this mountain?

End of May to mid September.

What is the guide-to-client ratio to climb this mountain?

The maximum guide-to-client ratio is 1:2, and we also do 1:1 climbs if you prefer to have a more personalized experience.

How far in advance should I start training and what kind of training do you suggest?

At least 5 to 6 months in advance.

Will there be porters to help to carry group and personal equipment?

No, you will carry all your gear. We recommend bringing a 35L to 40L backpack, but nothing larger, and keep the weight under 7kg.

Are there any other special requirements such as permits/insurance/vaccines that we need to consider before the tour?

Although our public liability insurance covers the activity, we strongly recommend that you obtain climbing/travel insurance and cancellation insurance to avoid any issues in case you need to make a claim.

Can I join a group?

Definitely! You can join a group of 2 people if you come on your own and want to join a group.

Will I need to bring any technical equipment of my own? Is it possible to rent equipment, and if so, what would be the approximate cost of that?

We provide technical gear such as ropes, slings, and carabiners. For personal equipment, you're welcome to bring your own. If you need to rent any items, we recommend Snell Sports in Chamonix—they're reliable and offer good prices. The final cost will depend on the items you need and the duration of the rental.

How will accommodation and meals be handled on the mountain?

You will be staying at Tête Rousse, Refuge du Goûter, and another hut for acclimatization, all on a half-board basis. Participants will cover the cost of meals for the guide during the program. These are the meals and water that participants should provide for the guide:

  • 1 bottle of water and 1 picnic lunch or piece of cake at the acclimatization hut.
  • 1 bottle of water at Tête Rousse.
  • 1 bottle of water and 1 hot dish at Goûter.

What happens in the event of bad weather?

We will find an alternative (Monte Rosa, Gran Paradiso, etc).

Great experience with Explore-Share. I was able to book at short notice on this busy route which surprised me. The Explore-Share team was fully and easily available to answer questions prior to arrival in Chamonix. The itinerary was clear and well-communicated, together with the training programme. Very slick operation. Once in Chamonix, the itinerary made total sense and was well-executed. Training and acclimatisation were just right. The guide, Félix, was excellent, very personable, well-organised and above all very patient. Truly an exhilarating experience.
