With 4,634 meters high, the Monte Rosa is the second highest mountain in the Alps and western Europe, only surpassed by the Mont Blanc. I will guide you on a fantastic 6-day hike through the classic route in the Monte Rosa Massif. Well over 3,000 meters high, we will enjoy the views of the magnificent Matterhorn and Breithorn mountains, and we will hike on both the Swiss and the Italian sides of the Alps.
The tour is demanding: everyday we will walk about 8 hours, but we will take many breaks. The longest day we will walk about 30 kilometers in 7 to 9 hours, carrying an 8 to 10 kg backpack. Nevertheless, the program is suitable for anyone who likes to hike in the mountains with good accommodation and services.
I strongly recommend that you go down to the area a few days before the tour starts so you acclimatize to the altitude.
Overall, we will spend three nights in Swiss territory and four in Italy. Also, we will sleep at four mountain cabins and three hotels, in double rooms.
We will start our trip at Zermatt, a pleasant mountain village, where we will sleep at the Bahnhof Hotel. Over the next four days, we will go south and experience the best stages of the legendary Monte Rosa route. The end of each day will find us enjoying a good local dinner and maybe a glass of red wine too, while we gather around the table with several other hikers from various countries.
So please send me a request to make this 6-day Monte Rosa Massif hiking tour happen. I would love to guide you up through these amazing landscapes.

You must take a flight to Zurich and land before 18.30. From the airport, take the train to Zermatt. We will meet at the station and take you to the hotel.
We will send a bag of travel clothing to where the tour ends.
At Zermatt, we will take an elevator up to 3,000 meters. We start through green pastoral landscapes and walk higher and higher. Lunch always be consumed in the open -it’s going to be our routine ahead! In the afternoon we arrive at our cabin -from there you can look out over nearly 30 peaks above 4,000 meters high, with Matterhorn and Breithorn in front.
From the foot of the Theodul Glacier, we will walk two hours in snow, only with walking sticks. Already in the Italian side, we will go down towards the Col Cime Bianche pass, then start a long descent towards the Ayas Valley and eat lunch along the way. From the valley we have a clear-hour ascent to the lodge.
From Bettaforca pass, we will go down towards Gressoney valley -stopping for lunch in the small town of Stafal. The afternoon stage starts in the forest, while the vegetation disappears the higher we go.
First we ascend, and then we carry it down to Alagna, where we eat lunch. We walk by a landscape of mountain pastures, goats and sheep. The end of the day finds us going up the valley with Monte Rosa in the background. We stay overnight in a small cabin.
The sight of Punta Gnifeltti (4,559 meters high) is striking. We take a long ascent towards Colle del Turlo. If we are lucky, we will spot the stone goats. After the passing, we go on a long but enjoyable descent, partly stone coated, to the village of Macugnaga. We sleep in a nice little hotel.
The last trek starts going up Monte Moro Pass, with the Golden Madonna statue on top, and having lunch at Refugio Oberto. Then we go down a few hours to Matt Mark, and then we have a clear-hour left to the dam, our final spot. We take the bus down to Saas Grund. At the small inn, we will have a nice farewell dinner.
We go by bus from Saas Grund to Zurich, a 3,5-hour journey. Buses run every hour, so you can book flights departing form Zurich after 12.
Stay up-to-date on the best adventures.
