Join me for this fun and informing 5-day mountaineering skills course as we trek through the Cascade Range and summit either Mount Baker or Mount Shuksan.
Our trip begins with three-and-a-hald full days of instruction in the backcountry. Once we have met up and arrived at the trailhead, we will hike to our campsite and set everything up.
Over the course of these three days we will go over all the necessary skills for you to successfully mountaineer on your own, including walking with and without crampons, self-arrest and team-rope arrest techniques, using an ice axe, stacking, flaking and how to use all your gear.
On the fourth day, we will practice self-rescue and team-rescue techniques that are crucially important for when you are mountaineering without a guide. Since we have a long day the following day, we will be sure to get to bed nice and early.
This day is the highlight of the trip. We will wake up at around 1 am and head for the summit. Once we are up at the top of either Mount Baker or Mount Shuksan, we will enjoy the sunrise before heading back to camp.
After a brief rest, we will learn and practice crevasse rescue techniques before packing up camp and heading back to the trailhead. While we are en route back to Seattle, we will enjoy a well-deserved celebratory meal at a local restaurant.
So what are you waiting for? Book now for this exhilarating and informative 5-day mountaineering skills course through the scenic Cascade Range!
If you like the look of this trip then I think you will also enjoy my 2-day guided winter camping trip in the Cascade Range!
We will meet up at a local park and ride then drive to the trailhead and hike to our first camp, where we begin going over necessary skills and techniques.
We will spend the course of these days learning and practicing all the necessary mountaineering and safety techniques to successfully complete our trip.
We will wake up at 1 am and begin our ascent to the summit of either Mount Baker or Mount Shuksan. After returning we will go over a few more safety techniques then return to Seattle.
What experience and how fit do I need to be to join this expedition?
Climbing Mount Shuksan is a challenging but rewarding alpine adventure that requires careful preparation and execution. This technical climb demands prior experience in alpine climbing and glacier travel. You should be comfortable with crampons, ice axes, rope work, and navigation in glaciated terrain. Good cardiovascular shape is also necessary in order to be prepared for long, challenging days at high altitudes.
What kind of training do you suggest?
Preparing physically to climb Mount Shuksan, a challenging alpine endeavor, requires a comprehensive training plan. Focus on aerobic exercises like hiking, trail running, or stair climbing. These activities simulate the cardiovascular demands of high-altitude climbing. You can also start strengthening your core muscles to improve balance and stability. Include exercises like planks, Russian twists, and leg raises. Maintain flexibility through stretching exercises, yoga, or Pilates. Being limber can help prevent injuries and make navigating difficult terrain more manageable.

Miyar's guides have relevant training through the American Mountain Guides Association (AMGA) for the terrain in which they guide. This includes training in rock climbing, ice climbing, glacier travel, and snow sports, as well as avalanche training and Wilderness First Responder or higher level medical certification.

Five days of awesome is all I can say. Glen our instructor and guide was extremely knowledgeable. I had previous glacier mountaineering experience and his techniques were so much more efficient than what I had been taught. To top it off we had a great summit day.

I took the Mountaineering skills course (5 days) in Baker. I learned so much about Glacier travel, rope management, crevasse rescue, and much more! Glen, our guide was awesome and highly knowledgeable. We also got to summit Mt. Baker during the course which was the most magical part! I HIGHLY recommend them!
