Description

Located between the Fuegian Andes and the Beagle Chanel, on the easternmost part of Tierra del Fuego, Peninsula Mitre is a preserved area hidden from the public eye so far. Join us on a unique 7-day gold-seekers’ hike in this beautiful Peninsula in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina!

On this adventure, you’ll cross several rivers, alongside witnessing an amazing landscape of peatland, forest, verdant grasslands, hills, gorgeous beaches, and soaring cliffs. And if you are a bird lover, you are in for a special treat!

We’ll begin from the remote town of Ushuaia, capital of  Tierra del Fuego. This excursion is a longer version of our trip to Cape San Pio. The first two days we’ll head towards Estancia Moat and to see the southernmost lighthouse in the world. Then, on the third day, we’ll go to Bahia Sloggett where we’ll find abandoned golden dredges and remains of the huts of gold seekers.

The bay is a gateway to Peninsula Mitre and is emblematic of the Fuegian Gold Rush. The trail leads through a lush forest, further onto the calm banks of the Beagle Chanel where you will also catch a glimpse of the history and lifestyle of Patagonian and Fuegian tribes. We’ll hike on rocky terrain, encountering some wild horses and other cattle on the way as well as local gauchos.

Itinerary

Day 1: From Ushuaia to the camp near Casa Vieja

First, we’ll drive for 2 hours through the beautiful valleys of Fuegian Andes, along the banks of the Beagle Channel to reach Estancia Moat. Next, we’ll hike on unexplored banks for about 5 hours to reach the campsite near Casa Vieja.

Day 2: Head to Cape San Pio to see the lighthouse

After a delicious breakfast, we’ll continue on gorgeous beaches towards Cape San Pio. On the way, you’ll catch sight of many birds including the Andean condor. We’ll arrive at the lighthouse by afternoon to enjoy a magical view. After, we’ll return to the campsite to enjoy another peaceful night.

Day 3: From Puesto Ibara to Slogett Bay

After a hearty breakfast, we’ll head towards the legendary Slogett Bay. Before we arrive, you will pass by a sailboat stranded on the beach. At the top of the cliff lies the camp of 75 years old Ramon, one of the last gold seekers in the region. Additionally, we will catch sight of an abandoned golden dredge, a refuge and remains of the huts of gold diggers. We will have dinner either in the tent or in a shelter and sleep cradled by the sound of waves.

Day 4: Head from Slogett to Rio de la Vaca

We will rest in Slogett and enjoy the morning there. After having a traditional picada which includes cheese, charcuterie, eggplant, and bread, we will head to the Rio de la Vaca cove to set up camp.

Day 5: Return from Rio de la vaca to Moat

Another beautiful day of walking before returning to civilization! We’ll return to Estancia Moat and its small prefecture where you will have the chance to visit the post and meet the military people living there.
