Description

If you wish to go on a truly splendid hike in Tanzania, join us to climb Mount Meru, the fifth highest peak in Africa.

Located 70 km west of Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru stands tall at a staggering height of 4,562 m and offers clear views of Kilimanjaro on a clear day.

The trail begins from Momella Gate in Arusha National Park and takes you to explore the amazing plant and animal life of the region. You’ll spend the first two days hiking on a beautiful path, passing by the Ngarenanyuki River, heading towards Miriakamba Hut (2500m) and Saddle Hut (3500m). Stunning views of the peak of Meru will accompany you all along.

We’ll attempt the summit on the third day, starting just past midnight. Ascending gradually, we’ll cross Rhino Point (3800m) and  Cobra Point (4350m) to get to the top. And what a feeling it would be! The summit offers unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro and  Mount Meru Ash Tray. After relishing our time here, we’ll get back to Momella Gate and further to Moshi, ending this amazing trip.

Regarding difficulty, keep in mind that it is a medium grade trek suitable for both seasoned hikers and newbies. We can make the trip all year round and all you’ll need is a fit body to come along.

So, what are you waiting for? Lace-up your boots to join us on this amazing adventure in Tanzania. You won’t regret it! Also, check out this trip to Mount Kilimajaro, if looking for more treks in Tanzania.

Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival in Tanzania

We’ll pick you up from the Kilimanjaro International Airport, and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha. You’ll spend the rest of the day relaxing by the pool.

Day 1: Moshi – Miriakamba Hut (2500m)

After breakfast, we’ll pick you up from Arusha and drive you to the Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. Here, after registration with the Tanzania National Park (TANAPA), you will begin your ascent. The first day of hiking is similar to a walking safari; you should expect to see giraffes, zebras, antelope, buffalo, and potentially elephants near the trail. Due to the high possibility of spotting wildlife, an armed ranger, hired through the National Park, is required to hike with our team for the duration of the hike. As you continue, you will pass by the Ngarenanyuki River and a beautiful waterfall at the base of Mt. Meru. Then, we’ll arrive at the Miriakamba Hut (2500m), and you’ll enjoy a beautiful sunset and dinner here.

Duration: 5-7 hours hiking

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut (2500m) – Saddle Hut (3500m)

After breakfast, you will start ascending the steep trail along the ridge of the saddle. You might also spot various wild animals along the way! The trail has amazing views of Mt. Meru Crater and the Ash Tray. When you arrive at camp, you’ll have the option of hiking Little Mt. Meru (3820m) with your guide for more acclimatization. After an early dinner, you’ll receive ample rest before your midnight summit attempt. Get to sleep by 1900!

Duration: 3-5 hours of hiking

Day 3: Saddle Hut (3500m) – Summit Attempt (4566m) – Arusha (1400m)

You’ll wake up at 00:30 for tea and biscuits and thereafter begin your summit attempt at 1:30 am. The trail starts off on a steep grade to Rhino Point (3800m) and Cobra Point (4350m). The last hour of the hike will be a scamble on a rocky ridge between the crater and inner cliffs of Meru. You will reach the summit of Meru (4565m) at sunrise with spectacular views of Mt. Meru Ash Tray and Mt. Kilimanjaro. Enjoy your views then descend to Momella Gate and return to Moshi.

Duration: 12-14 hours of hiking

What people are saying about Explore-Share

Man

Climbing with guide Guillaume was absolutely a highlight of my 2-week Europe vacation. Originally, we were planning on climbing in the Calanques, but the park was closed due to wind and fire danger. Guillaume chose another amazing location (Pic de Bretagne) based on my climbing abilities and preferences and kindly offered train station pick-up and hotel drop off, which I appreciated very much. The multi-pitch route we did was not only fun but also the right amount of challenge, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The communication from the team (Gauthier) was prompt and clear—highly recommend!

Maxine

Luis Silva was a great climbing guide and belayer! He taught me how to do moves that were difficult and encouraged me to try routes that were challenging for me! Because of his encouragement, I managed to complete these routes! I really enjoyed the climbs and completed 8 routes in the Sesimbra/Azoia area. The weather was perfect, no direct sun and cool enough to enjoy the climbs. Explore-Share made booking an outdoor climbing experience in Lisbon extremely easy. Luis, our guide, was fantastic, and the platform’s organization was flawless.

Valeriya

You’re simply the best!!! :))) Explore-Share made everything easy and stress-free. Will definitely use again.

Joshua

We had Léo as a guide for our day climb in Fonty. We were blessed with a knowledgeable, warm, and instructive guide. Communication with Léo and Ivan was smooth and swift. Explore-Share was excellent in arranging everything for our day climb. The communication was quick, and the platform was easy to use, making our adventure stress-free.

Cami

Patrick was a great guide. He took us on an intermediate Via Ferrata at Passo Sella. Renato was quick to respond with any outreach on the Explore-Share platform. The booking process was straightforward, and once Patrick was confirmed, all went well. It was a wonderful experience, and I’d highly recommend the platform.
