Legend says in the time of the Aztec Empire, Iztaccihuatl was the most beautiful princess. She was in love with Popocatepetl, an aztec warrior. With the promise of marriage, he left to fight in a war. Iztaccihuatl heard he succumbed in battle. So she died from a broken heart. When Popocatepetl came back, he couldn’t stand the loss of his love. As a way to honor her, he put together different peaks and laid her on top of them, where she froze on time transforming into the mountain we can see today. Popocatepetl kneeled before her, turning himself into a volcano, that still guards her princess. Learn this and other legends of Iztaccihuatl on this 3-days expedition.
Iztaccihuatl is the third highest peak in Mexico. Its six craters make it a difficult journey to the summit. But, the hypnotizing views we’ll get from the top, specially of Popocatepetl, make it completely worth it.
The route we’ll follow on our ascent is called Los Portillos, and has two main sections. The first one begins at the La Joya parking lot (3,900 m) to the De Los Cien mountain hut. The path edges the valley of Mexico and Puebla. Then, the second section is the hardest, from the mountain hut to the area know as the knees, standing at 2,000 meters. Thereon, we’ll reach the Paza Glacier, and after a short ascent we’ll be at the summit, above the Pecho Glacier.
Also, please note this is a private trip. Therefore you’ll get an expert guide for every 2 people. And we include all the technical gear needed for the ascent. So you won’t have to worry about bringing it.
